All-Decade Team: Men's Soccer

By Sports Information

Williamsburg, KY – With seven winning seasons and a .534 winning percentage the UC Men’s Soccer team has been one of the most consistent teams over the past decade.  Cumberlands posted an 84-72-20 overall record that included a 45-32-2 mark in conference play, including reaching double-digit win totals three times. The Patriots' success over the past decade has been in part of a slew of talented players that have combined to notch 44 all-conference accolades, one MSC Freshman of the Year, and two NAIA All-American Honorable Mention recipients. The player that represents the men’s soccer team on UC’S All-Decade Team is forward Marvin Van der Made.

Van der Made is one of the most decorated players in program history as the only Patriot player to earn NAIA All-American Honorable Mention in the past decade and just the third player in program history to notch multiple NAIA honors in addition to being a two-time Mid-South Conference First Team All-Conference selection. In his two seasons with the Patriots, Van der Made netted 28 goals, dished out nine assists, and notched 65 points, including nine multi-goal games and four hattricks.  He finished the decade with the most goals and points by any Patriot during that stretch.

“Marvin was an integral piece to the growth we have shown as a team and program over the last two years. He was so much more to us than just a goal scorer and goal creator, he was a complete footballer and that’s what made him special.”
- Head Coach Chris Lefevre

Van der Made opened his Patriot career with 13 goals, an assist, and 27 points in the 2018 season. His 13 goals and 27 points helped guide UC to a 7-5-2 record, including a 4-2-1 mark against the MSC. The Rotterdam, Netherlands native made his presence known right from the moment he stepped on the pitch as he netted Cumberlands' first three goals of the season, including a golden goal in the 100’ against Bethel to help UC begin the season 1-0-1.  Van der Made posted three multi-goal games in conference play and notched four game-winning goals on the year to earn MSC First Team All-Conference Accolades and NAIA All-American Honorable Mention accolades.

Van der Made continued his strong presence during the 2019 season as he recorded 15 goals, eight assists, and 38 points in his senior campaign.  Van der Made recorded five multi-goal games and notched 19 of his 38 points in conference play to help Cumberlands finish with a 10-7-2 record and their first appearance in the NAIA National Tournament.  He tallied a career-high seven points twice, against SCAD and Thomas Moore, but perhaps one of his best plays came in UC’s double-overtime win over #25 Campbellsville.  Van der Made assisted Luis Jara in the 102’ for the game-winning goal giving the Patriots a 1-0 win.

“He influenced every game he played and he didn’t need to score or assist to have an immense impact for our team, he just needed to be himself and play with confidence and I believe he did that. That’s what made our team successful and him as an individual successful. He left a positive impact on many levels within our program and I am grateful to have had the chance to work with him for our time together.”
- Head Coach Chris Lefevre

Van der Made’s 38 points during his senior campaign were tied for the most point in a single-season during the past decade, while his eight assists were the second most over the past ten years.  He is also one of just two Patriot players to net at least 10 goals in consecutive seasons joining Pedro Antonelli.  Van der Made is also one of the Patriots to earn MSC First Team All-Conference honors in back-to-back seasons in the past decade.

Van der Made graduated from Cumberlands in December 2020 with a degree in Business Administration. He is currently in Europe pursuing his professional soccer career.

The UC All-Decade Team was determined based on stats, awards & honors received, and significance to the program in addition to input for members of the UC Athletic Department. It will include one representative from every sport and be comprised of 29 student-athletes. The all-decade team looked at everything from the 2010-2011 season through the 2019-2020 season.
