Women’s Wrestling Goes Unbeaten on Saturday

Williamsburg, KY – UC women's wrestling picked up three wins on Saturday against the Barons of Brewton-Parker, the Lions of Emmanuel, and the Vikings of Missouri Valley. The Patriots garnered their first MSC win over the Barons 34-7, defeated the Lions 26-18, and conquered the Vikings 38-8. Win the wins, Cumberlands improves to 8-2 overall and 1-0 in conference.

Against MSC opponent Brewton-Parker, UC grabbed the quick 10-0 lead with two back-to-back forfeits. At 116 pounds, Autumn Gordon won in a 10-0 tech fall over Brooke Richards for a 14-0 UC lead. The Barons won a decision at 123 pounds to shorten the Patriot lead to 15-3. Kelly-Ann Jimenez, 130 pounds, defeated Daisy Velazquez by 10-0 tech fall for a 19-3 team score.

Another forfeit for UC put the Patriots up 24-3. Brewton-Parker took a tech fall win in the 143 pound weight class to bring the deficit to 24-7. Cumberlands again took a forfeit to go up 29-7. At 191 pounds, Courtney Tompkins pinned Kim Vargas at 1:52 to give UC their first win in MSC play over Brewton-Parker 34-7.

In the next match against Emmanuel, Maia Phanthadara earned a 10-0 tech fall win over Charliette Hamer at 101 pounds to put UC up 4-0. The Lions had a tech fall at 109 pounds to tie the match 4-4 then followed up with a decision win to take the lead at 5-7. Sidney Salinas, 123 pounds, won in a 13-2 tech fall over Trinity Duarte to steal the lead at 9-8.

At 130 pounds, Emmanuel picked up another tech fall win to take over the lead at 12-10. However, Bridgette Duty, 136 pounds, won in an 11-0 tech fall over Sadie Tackett for UC to again take the lead 14-12. The Lions recaptured the lead 16-14 after a tech fall win at 143 pounds. Ismileyna Valles won in a 3-1 decision to tie the match up 17-17. At 170 pounds, Anna Naylor defeated Ophelia Lara in a 12-2 tech fall to give UC the lead at 21-18. Courteney Tompkins, 191 pounds, defeated Briana Jordan by fall at 1:27 to seal the 26-18 victory for Cumberlands.

The final match of the day, against Missouri Valley, started with the Patriots taking three straight forfeits for the 15-0 lead. At 123 pounds, Sidney Salinas won by fall at 1:57 over Julia Hooper to push UC's lead to 20-1. Kelly-Ann Jimenez, 130 pounds, defeated Jazmin Perez in a 12-1 tech fall for a 24-1 team lead. The Vikings then picked up a decision win to bring the deficit to 25-4.

Cumberlands bounced back at 143 pounds as Bridgette Duty won by 10-0 tech fall over Julia Mata, allowing UC the 29-4 lead. Missouri Valley won by decision at 155 pounds to shorten the deficit to 30-7. Anna Naylor, 170 pounds, defeated Katie Sugden in an 11-0 tech fall for the Patriots to go up 34-7. At 191 pounds, Courteney Tompkins won by tech fall 12-1 over Alyssa Cantu for UC to defeat Missouri Valley 38-8.
