Williamsburg, KY – The University of the Cumberlands Women's Tennis Team opened their 2017-18 season as they took part in the UC Invite against Union and Lincoln Memorial Saturday at the UC Tennis Courts. Competing as individuals each school played two matches, with each match beginning with a score of 1-1.
Isabella Dale,
Tomomi Nagao, and
Jaclyn Jewell each went 2-0 in singles play to lead the Patriots. Dale, the reigning Mid-South Conference Player of the Year, picked up where she left off last year with 6-4, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-4 win. Newcomer Nagao earned a pair of wins at No. 2 singles with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Ljiljana Pajcin and a 6-4, 6-4 win over Julia Loos.
Jewell began her day with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Union and followed that up with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Julia Valls of Lincoln Memorial.
Candace Elam earned a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kacie Dotson of Union.
All four Cumberlands doubles team finished the day 1-1. After dropping their first match, Dale and Jewell teamed up for an 8-6 win against Lincoln Memorial.
Luka Lyttle and
Denee Lyttle teamed up at No. 2 doubles for an 8-6 win over Union, before falling in their second match 6-8.
At No. 3 doubles Nagao partnered with
Marian Bogajo to earn the first win over the day with an 8-1 win over Union.
Hannah Wampler and
Haley Mahan also won their doubles match against Union 8-5.
The Patriots will return to action Saturday, September 16, when they travel to Harrogate, TN to take part in Lincoln Memorial Speed Tournament.
