Box Score Richmond, KY – The 14
th-ranked University of the Cumberlands opened their 2018 season taking on the Ohio Valley Conference champions Eastern Kentucky Friday afternoon at the Greg Adams Tennis Center. The Colonels defeated the Patriots 7-0 to improve to 1-1 overall, while UC drops to 0-1.
Eastern Kentucky got off to a fast start earning a 6-0 win at #3 doubles. The Colonels picked up a 6-1 win at #2 doubles to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead in the match. At #1 doubles
Tomomi Nagao and
Jaclyn Jewell battled Alexandra Belle and Lisa Friess. The match was tied at 1-1, before EKU scored five of the next six points to win 6-2.
It was a similar story in singles play as EKU picked up wins at #1, #2, and #4 singles to extend their lead to 4-0 and clinch the match. At #3 singles
Denee Lyttle took a 3-1 lead in the first set, before Belle scored five straight points to win the set 6-3. Belle won the second set 6-1 to extend EKU's lead to 5-0. The Colonels posted straight set wins at #5 and #6 singles for the 7-0 final.
The Patriots return to the court Saturday, February 3, when they travel to Harrogate, TN to take on NCAA DII foe Lincoln Memorial. The match is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
