Women’s Wrestling Goes 1-2 at NWCA National Duals

Fort Wayne, IN – UC women's wrestling went 1-2 at the NWCA National Duals on Thursday and Friday. The Patriots started the first day with a 36-11 win over the Running Eagles of Life University but fell in the quarterfinals to the Tigers of Campbellsville University 37-9. On Friday, Cumberlands suffered a loss to the Stars of Oklahoma City University by a final score 30-14 to wrap up the tournament. After competition, the Patriots move to 8-5 on the year.

Cumberlands dominated the match and was able to win all but two weight classes over Life in their first match for the 36-11 victory. At 101 pounds, Maia Phanthadara started by defeating Brigette Ariosa in a 15-5 tech fall for UC to take an early 4-1 lead. Jessica Rodriguez, 109 pounds, followed up by pinning Amber Garriga in 3:57, moving the score to 9-1. The Eagles won by tech fall at 116 pounds to shorten the deficit to 9-5. However, Madison Angelito picked up a pin over Tyesha Topps at 123 pounds in 1:40 to extend the lead to 14-5. Next at 130 pounds, Ismileyna Valles won in a 10-0 tech fall over Aysia Cortez for UC to hold an 18-5 lead halfway through the match.

At 136 pounds, Bridgette Duty earned her own 10-0 tech fall over Brooke Pagan, making the score 22-5. Following the pattern, Kylie Godinez also won in a tech fall at 143 pounds by a score of 14-4 over Sophie Gorman, putting the Patriots ahead 26-6. Anna Naylor, 155 pounds, recorded a fall at 3:45 over Raven Thomas for UC to be up 31-6. Courteney Tompkins won by forfeit at 170 pounds, allowing a 36-6 lead for Cumberlands. Life received a forfeit win at 191 pounds, but the Patriots were able to stay on top to win the match 36-11.

In the quarterfinals, the Patriots faced a tough opponent in Campbellsville and suffered a 37-9 loss. Phanthadara, 101 pounds, started off strong for the Patriots with an 8-5 decision win over Mckenzie Bacich to put UC in control 3-1. At 109 pounds, the Tigers answered back with a tech fall win to steal the lead at 5-3. Arelys Valles was able to tie the match at 6-6 by defeating McKayla Campbell in a 14-14 decision win by criteria at 116 pounds. Despite UC's best effort to put additional points on the board, Campbellsville managed to win the final seven weight classes to seal the 37-9 victory.

After falling to the consolation rounds, UC started strong against the Stars but ultimately came up short 30-14. Maia Phanthadara, 101 pounds, put the Patriots ahead 5-0 with a forfeit win. At 109 pounds, Jessica Rodriguez won in a 12-2 tech fall over Raven Guidry, pushing the lead to 9-1. Next at 116 pounds, Arelys Valles notched a 6-5 decision win over Lei Nacapuy for a 12-2 UC lead. The ten point lead didn't hold as Oklahoma City went on a terror by winning the next five weight classes to take the lead at 26-13. After a double forfeit at 170, the Stars capped off the match with a tech fall win at 191 pounds to win the match 30-14.

The Patriots will be back on the mat on Sunday, January 14 to compete at the Tornado Open in Bristol, TN.
