Williamsburg, KY – Fourth-seed University of Northwestern Ohio used a pair of four-run innings to knock off top-seed Bryan 10-5 in the third game of the Williamsburg Bracket of the NAIA Baseball Opening Round Monday night at Doyle Buhl Stadium. With the win Racers improve to 40-18, while the Lions moves to 40-16.
The game started with a perfect first two innings for both teams as the first six batters were retired in order.
UNOH broke the scoreless game in the top of the third inning as Junior Gomez hit a one-out double and scored on a Kyle Fisher RBI single to give the Racer a 1-0 lead. Myles Mitchell drilled an RBI double, before Erich Gonzalez belted a two-run homer to left field to give UNOH a 4-0 lead.
The Racers extended their lead in the fourth as Gomez was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning and advanced to third on back-to-back groundouts. Gonzalez hit an RBI double down the leftfield line to make it 5-0 in favor of the Racers. After an intentional walk, Jack Barrie smashed a three-run over to centerfield to give UNOH an 8-0 lead.
Bryan got on the board in the fifth as Rodney Teenie hit a leadoff single to start the inning. Teenie stole second and two errant throws by UNOH allowed Tennie to score and cut the deficit to 8-1.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the seventh when a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases with one-out for the Lions. Trevor Behrent cleared the bases with a grand slam over the leftfield wall, his seventh homer of the season, to make it an 8-5 game.
Northwestern Ohio brought in Jacob Hulcher, who recorded the final eight outs for the Racers and notched his eighth save of the season. UNOH added a pair of runs in the top of the ninth for the 10-5 final.
Olivier Mailloux (11-3) earned the win after hurling 6.0 innings, scattering three hits and two ones, only one of which was earned. He also struck out six in the game. UNOH had four players notch multiple hits led by Fisher who went 3-3 with a walk and two runs scored.
Behrent led the way for Bryan with a grand slam, while Jacob Justice finished 2-3 with a run scored. Stephen Chamblee (11-1) took the loss after pitching 3.2 innings scattering eight hits and eight run scored.
Northwestern Ohio advances to the next round where they will face third-seed Point Park tomorrow at 11 a.m. Bryan drops to the elimination where they will face the winner of fifth-seed Marian vs. second-seed Cumberlands tomorrow at 3 p.m.
