Men's Track Clinches Second-Straight MSC Indoor Championship

Birmingham, AL – Eleven hours and 185 points later, Cumberlands men's track won the Mid-South Conference Indoor Championship on Monday, well ahead of conference opposition. Paving way to their second consecutive indoor conference championship, the Patriots placed in scoring position in every event entered in.

Nicolas Grandperrin was UC's leading scorer during championship competition, tallying 20.5 points through three events. The junior began his day in the 1000-meter run, sweeping the field with a time of 2:29.30. The first-place finish, three seconds ahead of the next finisher, was a personal best for Grandperrin along with an NAIA "A" standard. He followed the performance in the 3000-meter run, taking second to Shawnee State's Seth Farmer with a time of 8:46.97 while clocking another personal best.

Grandperrin rounded out his day by taking a leg in the distance medley relay and contributed to 10:56.54, first-place finish. Completing the relay team was JP Wagoner, Garrett Hadaway and Jacob England.

Also claiming 18 points to his name, Lucas Huelvan rounded out the stellar day by the distance squad with a first and second place finish as well. Huelvan paced 4:15.80 in the eight-lap affair, taking first overall with a two-second margin. Huelvan shined in the 1000-meter run later in the day as well, following Grandperrin through the finish line at 2:32.11 in second place.

Leading the rookies across the conference, Simeon Coleman was named MSC Freshman of the Year after scoring 16.5 points himself. The freshman got the early-day first-place win in the 600-meter run, clocking 1:22.58 through the long sprint. Coleman continued to show off his skills in the 400 meters, tallying a fourth-place finish while clocking 2:00.06 though the turns. Coleman concluded his day in the final running event, contributing to third-place, 3:2634-finish in the 4x400 meter relay.

From the hands of the throwing squad, The Patriots tallied an additional two first-place finishes to bring the total of topped-fields to six events. Jacob Washburn got the honors in the weight throw, launching a 15.41-meter mark. Dominick Joseph led shot put with a toss of 14.75 meters. Washburn followed with a 14.46-mark of his own for third place.

In addition to Grandperrin and Huelvan, the Patriots tallied several more runner-up finishes. Demarius Smith commanded a pair of second-place and A-standard finishes. The Sophomore recorded a 6.87-second sprint in the 60-meter dash and crossed the finish line in 21.27 seconds in the 200-meter dash. Prior to the DMR, Wagoner clinched a silver medal in the 60-meter hurdles, posting an 8.97-seond finish.

Off the track, the Patriots snagged 28 points between three field events. Sophomore Sam Martin led a trio of top-eight finishes in pole vault, claiming second after clearing 3.80 meters. Nathan Hepburn got the silver in high jump, launching over 1.85 meters high for the clear. Placing fourth in long jump, Jayce Shaffer launched 6.50 meters off the board.

With the win, head coach Randy Greer was named co-MSC Coach of the Year. Greer split the bid with Cumberland Phoenix's Mardy Scales.

Cumberlands finished first overall with 185 points, followed by runners-up Lindsey Wilson with 160 points. Cumberland finished in third (130), Campbellsville in fourth (97), Shawnee State in fifth (75), Georgetown in sixth (42) and Pikeville in seventh (2).

The Patriots track & field teams return to the JDL Fast-Track in Winston-Salem, NC at the end of the week for the JDL DMR Invitational. Cumberlands last saw action at the flat track at the Camel City Invitational.
