Harrogate, TN – The 25
th-ranked UC men's tennis won four singles matches and the double point to defeat NCAA DII Lincoln Memorial in their season opener Saturday afternoon.
The Patriots struck first in the match as
Martin Barbier and
Eric Banoub defeated Sebastian Colla and Fabian Sjokvist 6-4 at #1 doubles. LMU won #2 doubles, however
Jan Dietrich and Anthony Kwok tallied a 7-5 win at #3 doubles to secure the point and give Cumberlands a 1-0 lead heading into singles.
UC extended their lead in singles play as
Luis Montull notched a 6-2, 6-3 win over Mortiz Hoerner at #3 singles. Barbier, a reigning NAIA first team All-American, followed with a 6-4, 6-4 win at #1 singles over David Segarra. That win extend Cumberlands lead to 3-0 in the match.
Newcomer
Max Nijssen clinched the match for the Patriots with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Sjokvist at #5 singles. The Railsplitters got on the board with a pair of three set wins at #2 and #6 singles. At #4 singles, Banoub took the first set from Colla 7-5, before dropping the second set 5-7. In the decisive third set, Banoub won 10-8 to win the point for the 5-2 final.
The Patriots will return to the court Saturday, February 9, to face Young Harris in their home opener. The match is slated for 12 p.m. at the UC Tennis Court.
