Williamsburg, KY – Facing their second NCAA DII opponent in less than a week, the 15
th-ranked UC women's tennis team defeated Young Harris 7-2 in their home opener Saturday afternoon at the UC Tennis Court. With the win the Patriots improve to 1-1 on the year, while the Mountain Lions fall to 0-2.
Cumberlands started the match up 3-0 after forfeit wins at #5 and #6 singles as well as #3 doubles. At #2 doubles,
Grace Steely and
Tessa Perkins teamed up to defeat Carol Quevedo and Milica Dobic 8-4 for their first collegiate win. The win also extended UC's lead to 4-0.
Oriana Labaqui and Ana Rodriguez jumped out to a 4-0 lead at #1 doubles; however the Patriots duo of
Jaclyn Jewell and
Tomomi Nagao battled back and evened the score. UC was able to complete the comeback, winning the point 8-6 and clinching the match.
Nagao strong play continued into the singles matches as she defeated Rodriguez 6-3, 6-0 at #2 singles to extend the lead to 6-0. Young Harris recorded back-to-back points at #1 and #3 singles, before Steely notched her first collegiate singles win with an 8-1 win over Dobic.
The Patriots will return to the court Wednesday, February 27, when they travel to Barbourville, KY to face rival Union. The match is slated for a 2 p.m. first serve.
