Lawrenceville, GA – The 19
th-ranked UC men's tennis team won two doubles and four singles matches to defeat (RV) Olivet Nazarene 6-2 Tuesday morning. With the win the Patriots improve to 4-3, while the Tigers move to 3-4.
The Patriots struck first as
Martin Barbier teamed with
Eric Banoub for an 8-3 win over Francisco Faria and Jose Castro at #1 doubles. With the win the duo improves to 5-2 on the season. UC extended their lead as
Aatu Merenheimo and
Luis Montull posted an 8-6 win at #2 doubles. Olivet cut the lead to 2-1 with an 8-3 win at #3 doubles.
Cumberlands pushed their lead back to two points as Barbier post a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jose Castro at #1 singles.
Luis Montull and
Sjoerd Nijssen recorded straight sets wins at #3 and #6 singles to clinch the match for the Patriots and extend their lead to 5-1. The Tigers earned the point at #4 singles, before Merenheimo defeated Faria 7-6, 7-6 at #2 singles to give UC a 6-2 lead.
Eric Banoub faced Tyler Cannon at #5 singles, however their match was halted.
The Patriots will return to the court Wednesday, March 20, as they host Lindsey Wilson in their Mid-South Conference opener. The match is slated for 1 p.m. at the UC Tennis Complex.
