Williamsburg, KY – The 20
th-ranked UC women's tennis team returned to their winning ways after defeating Midway 9-0 Tuesday afternoon at the UC Tennis Complex. With the win the Patriots improve to 5-4 overall, while the Eagles move to 6-9.
The duo of
Jaclyn Jewell and
Tomomi Nagao struck first with an 8-1 win over Carly Poste and Jessica Keith at #2 doubles to give UC a 1-0 lead. Playing #1 doubles for the first time in their career,
Tessa Gray and
Grace Steely recorded an 8-2 win to move to 5-3 on the season.
Mikaela Fros and
Sydney White completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 win at #3 doubles.
Cumberlands strong play continued in singles matches at Nagao defeated Poste 6-0, 6-0 to improve to 6-2 at #1 singles and extend UC's lead to 4-0. Jewell followed with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Annette Tran for her first victory of the season and clinched the match for the Patriots. Fros recorded an 6-0, 6-1 win at #3 singles, while Steely blanked Keith 6-0, 6-0 at #4 singles for to push the lead to 7-0.
Gray and
Hannah Wampler tallied 6-1, 6-1 wins at #5 and #6 singles, respectfully for the 9-0 final. With the win, Wampler improves to 2-0 on the season.
The Patriots will return to the court Friday, March 29, when they host 14
th-ranked Cumberland in a MSC showdown. The match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. at the UC Tennis Complex.
