UC Men’s Tennis Extends Win Streak to Three with 5-3 Win

Williamsburg, KY – The 18th-ranked UC men's tennis teams extended their win streak to three with a 5-3 win over 14th-ranked Cumberland Friday afternoon at the UC Tennis Court.  The win is the Patriots first win over a top-15 opponent this season and UC's first win over the Phoenix since April 18, 2015.

Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub got the scoring started with an 8-3 win over Alejo Bagnara and Pau Cruanas at #1 doubles to give UC the early 1-0 lead.  The win is the duo's fifth straight and moves them to a 3-0 in conference play.  Cumberlands (7-4; 2-1 MSC) extended their lead as Anthony Kwok and Jan Dietrich tallied an 8-2 win at #3 doubles.  At #2 doubles Aatu Merenheimo and Luis Montull battled Thiago Lopes and Francisco Meaca, however, Lopes and Meaca would notch an 8-6 win cutting the Patriots lead to 2-1 heading into singles play.

Barbier continued his strong play as he defeated Ramon Puertolas 6-4, 6-2 at #2 singles to extend UC's lead to 3-1.  Barbier improves to 8-2 on the season, including riding a five game win streak.  The Phoenix posted a straight set win at #4 singles, before Montull remained undefeated in conference play with a 6-2, 7-5 win Lucich at #3 singles to give the Patriots a 4-2 edge.

Cumberland (7-5; 0-1 MSC) cut the lead to 4-3 with a win at #1 singles.  Banoub (#5 singles) and Kwok (#6 singles) won the first set in their respective matches before play was suspended due to rain. Play resumed with Kwok leading 5-1 in the second set and he would hold on for the 6-3, 6-2 win at #6 singles to clinch the victory for the Patriots.
Kwok improves to 3-1 in singles play on the season, including a 2-0 mark in conference matches.

The Patriots will return to the court Saturday, March 30, when they travel to Pikeville, KY to face the Bears in MSC action.  First serve is set for 1 p.m.
