Patriots Fall to Tigers in Battle of Ranked Teams

Campbellsville, KY – Entering the match on a six-match win streak, the 14th-ranked UC men's tennis team had a 4-2 lead however couldn't get the final point as they fell to 19th-ranked Campbellsville 5-4, Friday afternoon at the Kelly Hall Tennis Complex. With the win the Tigers improve to 14-6 overall and 3-2 in MSC play, while the Patriots move to 10-5, including a 4-2 mark in conference play.

Campbellsville struck first with an 8-4 win at #2 doubles to take an early 1-0 lead.  UC evened the score at 1-1 as Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub, the 20th-ranked doubles team in the NAIA, posted an 8-5 win over Will True and Blayze O'Keefe.  The duo improves to 6-0 in conference play and extend their win streak to nine straight matches.  At #3 doubles, Anthony Kwok and Jan Dietrich battled Matus Sevcik and Adrian Sabrojo.  It was a back-and-forth match that was evened at 8-8, however Campbellsville won the match 9-8 to take a 2-1 lead into singles.

UC got off to a quick start in singles play take the first three singles points.  Aatu Merenheimo struck first with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Sabrojo at #2 singles to even the score 2-2. At the #1 position, Barbier notches his ninth straight win a 7-6, 6-3 win over 35th-ranked Will True to give the Patriots a 3-2.  Luis Montull rallied at #3 singles, taking both the second and third sets for the 2-6, 7-6, 6-3 win. 

With a 4-2 lead, the Patriots struggled to close out the match as Campbellsville posted straight set wins at #4, #5, and #6 singles for the 5-4 final.

Barbier and Montull both notch a perfect 6-0 mark in MSC play and have won nine straight matches.  Merenheimo improves to 4-2 in conference play. 

The Patriots will return to the court Saturday, April 13, when they host the UC Doubles Challenge.  First serve is set for 1 p.m.
