Bowling Green, KY – After stellar performances at the home invitational this weekend,
Demarius Smith was named Mid-South Conference Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, as released by the conference office on Monday. The sophomore earned the weekly honors for the seventh time in his career with the Patriots.
Smith showcased his talents in the 400-meter dash in his only solo event of the day. Racing the one-lap sprint for the first time in his collegiate career, he cruised past the NAIA "A" standard with his 48.12-second, third-place finish. The automatic qualifier ranks the sprinter 15th on national charts.
Also adding his name to the relay foursomes, Smith tabbed his first national cut of the day in the 4x100-meter relay. Through the exchanges, the Georgia-native helped pull his team to a "B" grade, clocking 41.88 seconds, also ranking 15th on the national performance lists.
The sophomore rounded out his day with the final track event of the weekend, the 4x400-meter relay. Smith lent his hand in the third third-place finish of the day, contributing a 50.92-second, third-leg split on the squad's way to a 3:22.16 finish across the line.
Smith was the lead scorer on the track for the Patriots, having his hand in 18 of the team's 160 points scored in front of the home crowd at the University of the Cumberlands Invitational. The Patriots won the meet, beating four other teams ranked in the NAIA top-20 and several MSC schools.
This week marked the second time of the outdoor season Smith notched the conference weekly honor, after claiming it back on March 20. The sophomore also earned the recognition twice during the 2019 indoor season and three times combined last year.
