Owensboro, KY – The 14
th-ranked UC men's tennis team swept the doubles matches to en route to a 5-0 win over top-seed and 16
th-ranked Cumberland in the semifinals of the Mid-South Conference tournament Friday night at the Owensboro Tennis Complex. With the win the Patriots advance to the championship match of the MSC Tournament and improves to 12-5 overall.
For the second straight match the duo of
Luis Montull and
Anthony Kwok recorded the first point of the match with an 8-6 win at #3 doubles. The 20
th-ranked doubles team of
Eric Banoub and
Martin Barbier followed with an 8-6 win over Alejo Bagnera and Ramon Puertolas at #1 doubles to extend the lead to 2-0. The tandem improves to 15-2 on the season and extends their win streak to 11 straight matches.
At #2 doubles, Cumberland's Thiago Lopes and Axel Lucich jumped out to a 6-2 lead over
Aatu Merenheimo and
Jan Dietrich. However the Patriots battled back recording six straight points for the 8-6 win and give the Patriots a 3-0 lead.
Cumberlands strong play continued in singles play as Barbier tallied a 6-3, 6-2 win over P. Grabuleda Cruanas at #1 doubles to extend UC's lead to 4-0. Barbier extended his win streak to ten straight matches and improves his singles record to 13-2 on the season. Kwok clinched the match for Cumberlands with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Lopes at #6 singles for the 5-0 final. Kwok improves to 8-2 on the seasons.
The Patriots will return to the court Saturday, April 27, when they face the winner of second-seed Lindsey Wilson and third-seed Campbellsville in the championship match. The match is slated for 3 p.m. with a location to be announced soon.
