Mobile, AL – A day after advancing to the second round of the NAIA National Championships, the 19
th-ranked UC women's tennis team saw their season come to an end as they fell to third-ranked Xavier 5-0 Wednesday afternoon at the Mobile Tennis Center. With the win the Gold Nuggets improve to 18-5 on the year, while the Patriots finish with an 11-7 record.
In doubles play, the fourth-ranked doubles team of Charlene Goreau and Angela Charles-Alfre posted an 8-1 over
Jaclyn Jewell and
Tomomi Nagao. Xavier added an 8-4 win at #2 doubles and an 8-3 win at #3 doubles to take a 3-0 lead into singles play.
Xavier posted straight set wins at both #4 and #5 singles for the 5-0 win. Since the match was clinched all other matches were halted, however at #1 singles Nagao, ranked 26
th in the NAIA, won the first set 6-2 over third-ranked Goreau. Nagao was leading in the second set when play was stopped.
Nagao finished the season with a 12-3 record, while
Tessa Gray went 12-4 on the year.
Grace Steely posted a 10-8 mark to reach the ten win plateau during her freshmen season.
The Patriots had three all-conference players and all doubles pair tallied at least ten wins on the season.
