Louisville, KY - The seventh-ranked UC women's wrestling team showed they are one of the top teams in the NAIA by earning a podium finish at the NWCA National Duals. All of the teams competing at the tournament were inside the top-15 of the NAIA national poll.

The Patriots finished the two-day competition going 1-2 overall, earning them fourth place.

#7 CUMBERLANDS DEFEATS #6 WAYLAND BAPTIST, 24-22 (RESULTS)
Going into the final match Wayland Baptist was beating Cumberlands 22-17. Angela Buenrrostro entered the ring for the 191 matchup and only took 13 seconds to commit the pin fall and win the dual for the Patriots by score of 24-22. It was the first pin fall of Buenrrostro's career and the fastest pin this year for UC.

Andrea Schlabach notched the only win over a higher-ranked opponent for the Patriots in the dual when she defeated the fourth-ranked wrestler at 130, Amanca Alvarado. Schlabach, who is ranked number five, was able to able to win by pin fall at 4:33 raising her season pin wins to six, good for best on the team.

Olivia Coyne started the Patriots off with a win, earning a 7-6 decision over Wayland Baptist's Caryssa Aguirre. The win for Coyne, the 12th ranked wrestler at 101, was her first win over a ranked opponent this season, defeating the 13th ranked wrestler.

Madison Angelito blanked her opponent in the 116 bout, winning by a 10-0 tech fall.

#7 CUMBERLANDS FALLS TO #2 CAMPBELLSVILLE, 41-8 (RESULTS)
The Patriots started day two of the NWCA National Duals up against MSC-foe Campbellsville who they have now faced three times this season.Â

The lone win in the match for UC was by Bridgette Duty, who won by injury forfeit after 2:48. Up until the match was stopped, Duty was winning 9-0 thanks large in part to her signature barrel rolls.

The Tigers got the best of the Patriots once again earning nine match wins, six of which came by pin fall. Seven of the wrestlers UC faced are ranked including four wrestlers in the top three of their weight classes.

#7 CUMBERLANDS FALLS TO #1 LIFE, 24-18 (RESULTS)
The battle between the Patriots and the Running Eagles was a back and forth contest all the way through with the lead changing five times and the winner coming down to the last match.

Freshman, Jaine Stephens was able to get UC their first win of the dual in the 109 match. Stephens defeated the seventh ranked Katalina Bartelt by a 10-8 decision, giving Stephens her first career win over a ranked opponent.

After Life was able to gain a 12-9 lead, the Patriots top-wrestler all season, Duty was able to regain UC's lead. Nine of Duty's 13 wins have come by tech fall, but for this match she was able to pick up her second pin of the season against the eighth-best 136 wrestler, Aysia Cortez. Duty earned the pin at 4:06 after going up 6-0.

The final win in the dual came from Ismileyna Valles who wrestled up a weight class. Despite the weight difference, Valles was able to beat the ninth-best 155 wrestler in the form of Destinee Rivera. Valles went down 1-0 before scoring four straight in the match. She would hang on to win by decision 4-3.

NUWAY COLLEGE OPEN (RESULTS)
Also taking place over the weekend was the NUWAY College Open, where seven UC wrestlers competed toward five podium finishes.Â

Hailey Budney, Jessica Torres, and Ashley Ikner all finished in third place for their weight classes. At 136, Torres had a 3-2 record with two wins coming by fall, 3:42 and 4:23. Budney finished with a 1-2 record for the 155-weight class. Ikner notched a 3-2 record with all of her wins coming from pins. The only losses Ikner faced in the 130-weight class were forfeits because she was wrestling in the NWCA National Duals.

Taylor Whitehurst finished in fourth place for 143 after going 3-2 with all wins by decisions. Kaelynn Dougherty also received fourth place after going 1-3 in the 116-weight class.

UP NEXT
The Patriots will travel to York, NE to compete in the York College Duals & Individual Tournament next weekend, January 17 and 18. The duals are slated to start at 4 PM on opening day followed by the individual tournament on day two at 9 AM.
