Patriots Women’s Swimming Sweep Eagles 130-45

Williamsburg, KY –The third-ranked UC women's swimming & diving team notched a sweep winning all events and hitting 16 national cuts as they opened the second half of their season with a 130-45 win over Ashbury Friday night at the Patriots Aquatic Center.  With the win, the Patriots improve to 5-0 in dual meets the season. 

Mendy de Rooi led the way for the Patriots notching a pair of wins, while achieving "A" cuts in both events.  She began the day by winning the 200 free with a time of 1:57.42, before touching the wall in 54.18 to take top honors in the 100 free. 

Maryann Smith and Rebecca Loftus both tallied a pair of national standards at the meet. Smith took top honors in the 500 free with a time of 5:28.58, while hitting an "A" cut en route to a runner-up finish in the 200 free (2:02.83).  Loftus posted a couple of "B" cuts going 25.81 and 56.77 in the 500 free and 100 free, respectfully. 

Abigail Miller continued her strong freshman campaign as she recorded a 216.05.  It marks the second time this season that Miller has eclipsed the 200 point mark. 

Yuliia Hnidenko and Maria Basto showcased why they are two of the fastest swimmers in their respective events. Hnidenko, the fastest 100 breaststroker in the NAIA this season, went 1:08.12 to take first place in the event.  Basto swam 1:02.29 for the 100 back to take top honors.

Houston Burgoon went 25.65 to achieve a "B" cut and win in the 50 free. Izzy Jackson and Amy Hedrick tallied UC's final individual wins as Jackson won the 100 fly (1:01.82), while Hedrick took first in the 200 IM (2:18.30).

Cumberlands also posted three wins on the relays, including De Rooi, Leah Thomas, Basto and Burgoon teaming up to win the 400 free relay (3:48.74) to close out the meet.

The Patriots will return to the water Saturday, January 18, when they travel to Bristol, TN to face NCAA DII foe King University.  The meet is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
