UC Women's Wrestling Teams Finish Second and Third in Their Divisions
York, NE - The University of the Cumberlands sent enough women's wrestlers to field two teams in the York College Duals. The wrestlers were dispersed on the teams to make two quality, evenly matched squads. The two teams entered different pool play brackets that would decide which division they would be placed in.
The UC red team went 2-0 in Pool A, winning their pool and placing them in the Gold Division. The blue team finished 1-1 in Pool B, earning them second place and a spot in the Silver Division.
In the Gold Division the red team would go 0-2 giving them third place while the blue team repeated their pool play record of 1-1, for a third place finish in the Silver Division.
For both teams the Patriots were able to pick up pins in every dual with their pin total on the day at an astounding 18.
RED TEAM
#7 CUMBERLANDS DEFEATS #16 YORK COLLEGE, 34-15
The Patriots would have an impressive four pins in their opening dual which would be the most in one dual on the day. The first wrestler to earn a pin was also the fastest with Dorinda Andrews pinning her 109 opponent in just 17 seconds. Next was Ashley Tobe in the 123 bout at 2:29, just her second career pin. Andrea Schlabach got the Patriots back-to-back pins in the 130 matchup after 1:12.
UC did not stop there getting their third pin in a row with Jessica Torres beating the #13 ranked wrestler at 143, earning her first win by pin.
Madison Angelito also earned a win, blanking her opponent with a 10-0 tech fall.
#7 CUMBERLANDS DEFEATS #18 WALDORF UNIVERSITY, 35-9
After a handful of forfeits from Waldorf University, Bridgette Duty was able to earn the 10-0 tech fall after moving up to the 143-weight class.
Hailey Budney added to the Patriots total pin count after a 1:35 pin in the 170 bout, the first pin of her career.
#7 CUMBERLANDS FALLS TO #22 (NCAA D II) COLORADO MESA UNIVERSITY, 33-11
Duty was able to earn the Patriots first win in the dual at the 136-weight class over the #4 NCAA Division II wrestler, Dalia Garibay with her second tech fall, this time by a score of 12-2.
Taylor Whitehurst was another Patriot to earn her first career pin on the day. She was able to get the fall after 3:21 in the 155 matchup.
#7 CUMBERLANDS FALLS TO #3 UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN, 21-18
The Patriots lost a close one to one of the top teams in the NAIA.
Duty and Angelito were able to pick up their third and second tech falls on the day, respectively. Angelito who is ranked eighth at 116 was able to defeat the fifth ranked wrestler with her 15-4 tech fall. Duty earned her tech fall by blanking her opponent 11-0.
Tobe would pick up her second win by pin after 4:35 in the 123 matchup. Tobe was winning the match 11-2, good enough for a decision and one point away from a tech fall, but she was able to force her opponent into a pin, for the maximum five point win.
BLUE TEAM
#7 CUMBERLANDS FALLS TO #3 UNIVERSITY OF JAMESTOWN, 27-19
After a win by forfeit, Jaine Stephens was able to earn UC a pin fall victory. Stephens increased her wins over ranked opponents to two by beating 18th ranked Samantha Weeks and her first career pin at 4:56.
Kailee Godinez cruised to her first win on the day after shutting out her opponent and taking home the 11-0 tech fall.
#7 CUMBERLANDS DEFEATS #19 UNIVERSITY OF SAINT MARY, 34-16
The Patriots once again earned four pins in one dual, this time by the blue team.
Stephens once again got a pin, but she was able to cut her pin time in under half the time at 2:17.
Ashley Ikner joined Stephens by pinning her opponent in a mere 33 seconds, her fastest pin on the year.
Ismileyna Valles and Angela Buenrrostro earned their second pins on the year each. Valles scored her pin at 2:36 while Buenrrostro notched hers at 1:16.
#7 CUMBERLANDS FALLS TO SCHREINER UNIVERSITY, 26-22
Stephens was not slowing down and picked up her third pin in as many matches at 3:37.
Sophomore Kaelynn Dougherty earned her first career pin in a dual and just the second pin her career at 1:18.
Buenrrostro was able to pick up another pin on the day and at almost the same time as her last one, at 1:30
#7 CUMBERLANDS DEFEATS #16 YORK COLLEGE, 29-13
After winning all of her previous matches by forfeit, Olivia Coyne finally had an opponent to face off against, but the match only lasted 1:48 thanks to a pin by Coyne. The win was over ninth ranked wrestler at 101, Autumn Branson, giving 12 ranked Coyne her second win over a ranked opponent on the year.
Unranked Stephens may not have won her final match by pin, but she was able to come out victorious with a 12-0 tech fall over 12th ranked Claire Paine.
Ikner was able to defeat her opponent by the same score as Stephens, 12-2, Ikner's first tech fall win at the York Duals.
Dougherty secured back-to-back pins for herself this time at 1:58 bringing her season total up to three pins.
Godinez joined Ikner with a pin of her own at 48 seconds over the 13th ranked wrestler at 143, Rosa Vallejo.
UP NEXT
The Patriots will stay in York, NE to compete in the York College Open starting at 10 AM on January 18. Instead of the dual format from today, the wrestlers will compete individually in their own weight classes tomorrow.
