Women’s Swimming Opens Season Victorious for Fifth Consecutive Year

Coming off their third straight third-place finish at nationals the Patriots women's swimming team is looking to build on that success taking the first step tonight with a 194-56 win over Shawnee State Thursday night.  It marks the fifth consecutive season that the Patriots have been victorious in their season opener.

UC's strong performance was highlighted by taking first in all 14 races, while six individuals and two relays hit the NAIA provisional cut.  The Patriot opened the meet with Maria Basto, Cameron Klimczak, Mendy De Rooi, and Hanne te Velthuis working together to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:04.33.

Not only were those four swimmers part of the relay, but each also found individual success winning their respective races while achieving a provisional cut.  De Rooi led the way going 59.50 to outsprint her competitors and win the 100 free by seven seconds.

Basto tallied her first individual win of the season in the 200 back as she touched the wall in 2:29.18.  The sophomore also notched a provisional cut in the 200 free (2:15.66).  Teammate te Velthuis went 2:14.90 to win the 200 free in her Patriot debut. 

Klimczak touched the wall at 1:19.11 to win the 100 breast and hit a provisional cut. Senior Houston Burgoon secured Cumberlands' final individual standard as she swam 28.30 to win the 50 free.  Becca Loftus finished runner-up with a time of 28.78.

Alli Lovell and Maryann Smith each finished with a pair of wins on the night.  Lovell opened the meet winning the 200 breast (2:57.96), before taking the top spot in the 200 IM (2:39.06).  Smith won the 100 and 200 fly touching the wall at 1:12.20 and 2:39.43, respectfully.

Newcomer Libby Poley recorded her first collegiate win in the 100 back as she went 1:12.06.  Leah Thomas and Jami Margolen earned UC's final two wins.  Thomas won the 400 free with a time of 4:54.24, while Margolen went 10:42.59 to win the 800 free.

Burgoon, te Velthuis, Loftus, De Rooi closed out the meet by winning the 200 free relay with a time of 1:52.64.

The Patriots will return to the water Friday, October 30, when they host Union and Thomas More in a tri-meet at the Patriots Aquatic Center.  UC's home opener is scheduled for 4 p.m., with live video available here.
