Owensboro, KY – Getting a taste for what is to come from the conference play this spring, the UC women's tennis team competed as part of the MSC Women's Tennis Fall Open in Owensboro, KY. The Patriots competed in three singles matches and three doubles matches apiece.
Tomomi Nagao led the way for Cumberlands posting a 3-0 singles record, while teaming with partner
Mikaela Fros to go undefeated (3-0) in doubles play. Nagao opened the tournament by defeated #49 Brenda Aguilar of Campbellsville 6-2, 6-2. The junior followed that up with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Parisa Rachdanone of Lindsey Wilson, before recording a 6-3, 6-2 win over Kiersten Hensley of Shawnee State.
UC's top doubles team of Fros and Nagao began the tournament with a 7-6 (7-5) win over Campbellsville's Aguilar and Carbo. The terrific tandem added a big win defeating the ninth-ranked doubles team of Alexasndra Parra and Lucia Mora from Lindsey Wilson 7-5. In their final warm up prior to the ITA Cup, the duo posted a 6-0 win over Kiersten Hensley and Grace Eberhard of Shawnee State.
Johanna Beckmann and
Karen Contreras went 1-2 on the weekend, with their lone win being a 6-3, 6-2 win over Claire Carruthers and Jessica Willard of Shawnee State 6-0.
Individually, the Patriot newcomer Contreras went 2-1 on the weekend. The Panama native tallied a 7-6 (9-7) 6-3 win over Emily Carbo of Campbellsville, before defeating Willard (SSU) 6-0, 6-1.
Beckmann and Fros each picked up a singles win over a Shawnee State Bear on the weekend. Beckmann defeated Eberhard 65-0, 6-0, while Fros notched a 6-1, 6-0 win over Carruthers.
Nagao and Fros will return to the court Friday, October 16, when they represent UC at the ITA Cup in Rome, GA. It will be the first time the Patriots have a doubles team competing at the ITA Cup.
