Second-Ranked Patriots Earn Pair of Wins in Loyola, Midway Virtual Meet

Williamsburg, KY – The second-ranked UC women's swimming and diving team continued their strong showing finishing the weekend with a pair of wins after defeating #8 Loyola 192-95, while posting a 248-22 win over Midway, Sunday afternoon at the Patriots Aquatic Center.

UC added seven NAIA provisional cuts and one NAIA "A" standard on the day.  Maria Basto got the day started for the Patriots by going 5:19.01 to win the 500 free.  The Bogota, Columbia native added another national cut in the 200 IM after swimming 2:13.33. 

In the 100 free, Hanne te Velthuis lead a slew of Patriots, touching the wall in 53.24.  That time is a season-best for the sophomore and is the fastest time in the NAIA this season.  Teammate Rebecca Loftus recorded a 1.58 second improvement over her previous season-best to finish third with a national cut time of 55.06. 

A trio of Patriots hit nationals cuts in the 200 back led by the reigning NAIA Swimmer of the Year Mendy De Rooi.  De Rooi touched the wall in a career-best time of 2:06.00, which is also the fastest time in the NAIA this season.  Libby Poley and Samantha Danielsen each clipped their first career provisional cut finishing in 2:12.36 and 2:14.87, respectfully. 

Senior Houston Burgoon fended off a late surge to finish second the 100 fly, 1:03.41 to 1:03.43 over Faith Lawler.  Emilia Martinez Morales went 1:05.13 to place fifth in the event. 

Kayana Cook notched a runner up finish in the 200 breast with a time of 2:47.47.

Cumberlands closed out the meet with de Rooi, Burgoon, Loftus, and te Velthuis competing in the 200 free relay.  The relay team touched the wall in a winning time of 1:38.09 to recorded the fastest time in the NAIA by two seconds.  De Rooi led off the relay with a 23.75 split, the fastest 50 free in the NAIA.

The Patriots will return to the water Wednesday, December 9, when they travel to Wilmore, KY to take part in the Asbury Invitational.  That meet is a three-day meet and will serves as UC's mid-season meet.
