Box Score Danville, KY – The 17
th-ranked UC women's tennis team overcame an early deficit by sweeping the six singles matches defeat Centre 6-1 Sunday afternoon. With the win the Patriots improve to 2-2 on the year and extend their win streak to two straight, while the Colonels move to 2-1.
Tomomi Nagao and
Jaclyn Jewell got things start for the Patriots with a 8-5 win over Lainey Hill and Caroline Stallings to give UC an advantage in doubles. Centre, however, rallied to take #2 and #3 doubles 8-6, 8-6 to win the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead into singles play.
Mikaela Fros evened the score for UC with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Stallings at #2 singles. The win was the second straight for the sophomore. Jewell notched her first singles' win of the season with a three set win 6-0, 4-6, 10-3 over Hannah Doherty to put Cumberlands in front 2-1. Nagao followed with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Katharine Sherman at #1 to remain undefeated and give the Patriots a 3-1 advantage.
Hana Shimeno clinched the match for the Patriots with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Hill at #4, before
Grace Steely followed with a 6-4, 6-2 win at #5 singles.
Satsuki Mitani closed out the match, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over Caroline Lancaster at #6 singles for the 6-1 final.
The Patriots will return to the court Friday, February 21, when they travel to Barbourville, KY to face Union College. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
