14 NAIA National Cuts Highlights Patriots Women’s Swimming & Diving Win

The Patriots women's swimming & diving team continued their strong start to the season achieving 14 NAIA standards en route to 182-93 win over Berry College Saturday afternoon at the Patriots Aquatic Center.  UC tallied 11 wins in the meet to improve   With the win, Cumberlands improves to 3-0 on the season.

UC opened the day with Maria Basto, Kayana Cook, Aurora Stavoy, and Hanne te Velthuis teaming up to win the 200 medley relay.  The team posted a winning time of 1:49.89, which is the second fastest time in the NAIA this season.

Cumberlands had six different Patriots earn individual win on the day, led by Maria Basto, who notched three wins on the day.  The sophomore went 27.87 to win the 50 back, before clocking a 58.26 in the 100 back.  Basto capped off her meet in the 200 IM, where she clocked a 2:13.67, which is three seconds faster than the NAIA provisional cut.  Placing second in both the 50 and 100 back was Emilia Martinez Morales, who went 29.12 and 1:03.66, respectfully.

Te Velthuis also garnered a pair of individual wins leading the Patriots in the sprint free.  The Beerzarveld, Netherlands native went 24.80 to win the 50 free, and notching a national cut.  The sophomore followed that up leading UC to a podium sweep in the 100 free as she edged out the field to go 54.09.  Teammates Anastasiia Shatalova and Brianna Bender each clipped the national standard as they clocked a 54.87 and 55.78, respectfully.

UC saw a pair of national cuts in the 200 free as Isabella Cooksey touched the wall in 2:01.82 to capture the win.  Leah Thomas placed runner-up in the event with a time of 2:02.73.

The Patriots strength in the freestyle events showed up in the distances events as well.  Bender tallied her second national cut of the day as she went 5:25.37 to win the 500 free, while Elise Weiler picked up her first win of the afternoon as she took top honors in the 1,000 free with a time of 11:50.06.

Cook (100 breast) and Stavoy (100 fly) each added a national cut as the clocked a 1:10.31 and a 1:01.17 in their respective events.

Emma Lehmkuhl notched a season-high 215.35 on the one-meter dive board.  She continues to improve as it marks the third consecutive meet she has achieved a national cut.

Earning the final standard of the afternoon was Riley Cerqueira, who went 25.52 to finish runner-up in the 50 free.  Rebecca Loftus placed third in the event with a time of 25.80.

The Patriots will return to the water Thursday, November 18, as they travel to Barbourville, KY to take  part in the Union Bulldogs Invite.
