Day One Results (PDF)
Williamsburg, Ky – The Patriots took their home mats on day one of their annual Patriot Duals. In the field of 12 teams, UC had two teams, once in each of the two pool play brackets. In Pool A, the red team finished with a 3-2 record to earn third place, while the blue team earned a 2-3 record for fourth place in Pool B. Their finishes put the teams on course to face each other on day two in the Blue Bracket for their opening duals.
Chamira Cooper and
Jesse Kirby went undefeated on the day, each picking up five wins. Cooper picked up a pair of wins from falls and two from tech falls. Kirby had three of her victories from falls where she was never on the mat for more than 1:30.
Courtney Pittman wen 4-1 on the day and led UC in fall victories, with all four pins coming via pin. Out of the entire field the Lawrenceburg, KY native tied for the most pins and was third for most pins least amount of time at 4:48 combined.
The blue team was led by
Allyson Arrington who went 3-2, notching two of her wins by fall, once of which came just 30 seconds into the bout.
Hannah Thompson also got three wins, once of which was by fall in her first match of the day.
Ashley Courtney had the fastest pin of the day for the Patriots, pinning her opponent in just 15 seconds into the contest, one of her three wins on the day.
RED TEAM
In the red team's first win of the day over fifth ranked Emmanuel (NWCA: NCAA Coaches' Poll), they won handily 35-9.
Jaine Stephens,
Zoey Smith, Pittman,
Taylor Whitehurst and Kirby all won by falls-none of which went into the second period. Kirby had the biggest win in the dual defeating #3 Cristina Santoyo with a fall at 56 seconds after earning three, two-point takedowns.
The squad's second match of the day proved to be more of the same, this time taking on Campbellsville Maroon.
Alexis Medina and
Hailey Foster got their names in the fall win category along with Cooper, once again keeping all of the pins in the first period. UC led the entire match, eventually sealing the victory with a 30-13 score.
Cumberlands not only rattled off their third win of the day, but also their third 30+ point dual, winning 34-10 over Limestone. The team earned an impressive six fall victories, started by Stephens and Medina in the 109 and 116 matchups respectively. Pittman earned her fastest fall of the day at 30 seconds while
Kailee Godinez and
Jesse Kirby also noted pin victories. Godinez even had the tech fall victory secured up 10-0, but she was able to put her opponent on her back, to give UC the extra team point heading into the final two matches to put the dual out of reach for the Saints.
The Patriots struggled in their remaining two duals, losing 23-19 to #18 Brewton-Parker and then 28-20 to #9 Tiffin Gold (NWCA: NCAA Coaches' Poll). Despite the team losses Medina, Pittman, Cooper, and Kirby all won their individual matches in both duals. Medina blanked her opponents for a pair of 10-0 wins. Pittman, who is the #23 ranked wrestler at 123, wrestled up two weight-classes to 136 for all of the duals. She even defeated 20
th ranked Jorie Richardson from Brewton-Parker with a fall at 1:24.
BLUE TEAM
For the team's first dual of the day they faced Tiffin Green and came out victorious at 31-13. Both Arrington and Thompson got their days started with falls, both under the 1:15 mark to secure the win for the Patriots.
In their second dual, they had to face #12 Eastern Oregon and held them till the end, leading the dual until the final two bouts, but eventually losing 27-21. Courtney and
Hailey Budney picked up fall wins for UC. Budney took down 21
st ranked Krystal Fabricante at 1:19. Arrington got a 12-1 tech fall in the 155-matchup, before Cumberlands dropped the dual.
The Patriots got back on track in their third dual, defeating Liberty University, 38-1. Courtney and Arrington both earned pin victories in the dual. Thompson picked up another win, this time with a 10-1 decision, just out of reach of the tech fall win.
The final two matches for UC proved to be difficult with them dropping 43-5 to Campbellsville Black and 27-17 to Lyon with all of the Patriots wins coming from forfeits.
Both teams will return to the mats at the Patriot Duals for day two where they will have two duals each, including their opener against one another. All of the duals will be streamed on the UC Sports Network
