Williamsburg, KY – UC got their first dual win of the
Corey Ruff era, as they takedown the Midway Eagles 28-15 on Wednesday evening.
DeVaughn Sapien opened the dual as he wrestled Tyrique Simms in the 125-matchup. Sapien dominated the match getting eight points in the first period. He started in the top position in the second period and scored nine more points that led to a 17-2 tech fall in 4:33. Sapien is now 6-3 on the season.
In the 133-matchup the Patriots sent out #15 ranked
Gage Hudson, while Midway sent out Jahvar Lewis. Hudson scored the only points of the first period notching an early takedown. In the second period, Hudson would get another takedown and a two-point nearfall. That would be enough to get him a 9-2 decision. He now has a 7-3 record on the year and helped UC take an 8-0 lead over the Eagles.
In the 141-matchup, it was sixth ranked
Bryce Nickel taking on Kyler Adams. This match had a lot of drama as it went the whole way. At the end of period three, Nickel got a two-point reversal that tied the match at 5-5, but Nickel was on the wrong side of riding time and lost in a 6-5 decision. He falls to 9-3 on the season.
The 149-matchup would see 18
th ranked
Chasen Brown and Kaleb Clark. Brown would fight hard but suffer a loss by a 3-2 decision. Brown now has a 10-3 record as Midway cut the lead to 8-6.
The Patriots got back on the winning side as freshman
Thomas Ketchen-Carter started his Patriots career of with an 8-0 major decision victory over Daylon Stafford in the 157-matchup. The win extended Cumberlands lead to 12-6.
In the 165 matchup,
Dylan Preston would take on Tyler Norton. In the first period Preston would get three takedowns and a four-point nearfall, which led to the Patriots second major decision of the evening, which gave the Patriots a 16-6 lead. Preston is now 6-6 on the season.
The 174-matchup featured 11
th ranked
Jarod Swank and Jabril Williams. Swank controlled the match as he notched one takedown, a four-point nearfall, and a two-point nearfall in the first period. Then in the second period, he would get a takedown that led to a victory by fall in 4:21. Swank now holds a 6-5 record on the season.
Carlos Figueroa-Orduna would take on David Emfinger in the 184 matchup and would suffer a loss by fall, which brings his record to 1-5.
In the 197 matchup,
Colton Danielson took on Isaiah McDougal. Danielson would suffer a loss by a 7-1 decision, bringing his record to 2-5.
With the match already clinched, second-ranked
Aaron Johnson would compete in his first match of the season and take on Byron Pierce. Johnson continued his success from last season as he gets a fall victory in 2:24 as the Patriots notched the dual meet win 28-15.
The Patriots are 1-0 on the season. They are back in action on Saturday Dec 11, as they are competing at the NAIA Challenge Duals in Columbia, KY. They will have five duals, starting with RV Texas Wesleyan at 10 AM. Then RV Truett McConnell at 11:30 AM, followed by RV Williams Baptist at 1 PM. Next will be #13 Marian at 3 PM, then in the finale they will take on #3 Indiana Tech at 4:30 PM.
