Corbin, KY – The #23 ranked Patriots women's tennis team dropped their first match of the season 2-5 against #13 Union College on Wednesday afternoon in Corbin. Following the loss, UC will move to 2-1 overall this season.

Cumberlands started off doubles play well at the #1 spot with Tomomi Nagao and Mikaela Fros posting a 6-1 win against Ljiljana Pajcin and Christina Schoener. Next up at the #3 doubles spot was Laura Marie and Tessa Gray as they battled their way to a 6-4 win against Maria Artega and Mai Kitashita. The Patriots would go on to drop the #2 doubles match but still were able to walk away with the doubles win to take the early 1-0 lead.

Starting off singles play was Fros, who lost her #2 singles match to Pajcin at 0-6,6-7, which allowed the Bulldogs to tie up the score at 1-1. Nagao was up next as she posted a hard-fought three-set loss to Teodora Jovic at 2-6, 6-3, 3-6 which allowed Union to overtake the lead at 2-1. Ultimately deciding the match, UC would go on to lose the #4 and #3 singles matches, and the Bulldogs were able to take 4-1 lead for the match. However, the Patriots wouldn't give up the fight as Johanna Beckmann defeated Kitashita 6-1, 6-4 to take the number #5 singles match to put the score at 4-2. In the last match of day, Mitani would go on to lose the #6 singles match at 3-6, 3-6 to Alba Rodenas Risueno, and had the Bulldogs walk away with 5-2 win.  

The Patriots will return to the court Friday, February 26 to faceoff against Olivet Nazarene University. The match will being at noon at the UC Tennis Complex.
