13 National Cuts; 9 Event Wins Leads to Patriots 171-100 Victory over #5 Milligan

In their final meet ahead of the conference championships the third-ranked Patriots men's swimming and diving team defeated fifth-ranked Milligan 171-100 in a battle of two of the top-teams in the NAIA, Saturday afternoon at the Patriots Aquatic Center.  Cumberlands recorded nine wins on the day and clipped 13 NAIA provisional cuts in the victory.
 
Prior to the start of the meet, Cumberlands honored their ten seniors that are apart of the 2022 class.

Seniors Enzo Esteves and John Morgan McDonald each garnered a win in their final home meet.  Esteves edged out fellow Patriot senior Julio Heck da Silva to win the 50 free with a time of 21.46.  Heck da Silva clocked a 21.80 to placed runner-up in the event and clip the NAIA cut.



McDonald, the two-time Patriot record holder, won the 1,000 free as he touched the wall in 10:06.09.  He won the event by over nine seconds.  The Bishop, GA native also notched a runner-up finish in the 500 free.



Kacper Sobieszuk added a pair of wins and national cuts in the butterfly.  The freshman clocked a 1:54.60 to win the 200 fly before going 50.95 in the 100 fly to edge out the field.  Sobieszuk capped off his afternoon with a third-place finish in the 200 individual medley.  Teammate Martin Herion went 52.96 and 1:58.80, respectfully, in the fly to finish third and achieve national cuts.



Cumberlands continued to get strong performances in the breaststroke.  In the 100 breast, Nathan Souza clocked a 58.54 to win the event, while Mikolaj Kala touched the wall in 59.67 to place second.  Kala followed that up by winning the 200 breast with a provisional cut time of 2:11.62. 



The Patriots final individual win came in the 500 free as Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira finished with a time of 4:51.70 for the three second win.  The freshman added a national cut in the 200 free, clocking a 1:44.00.  Andres Caicedo added a pair of national cuts in the 200 free (1:47.58) and the 200 IM (1:57.92).

In the final event of the night, the 400 free relay, Esteves, Gonzalez de Oliviera, Ruiz Ramis, and Herion teamed up to go 3:12.14 for the win.

Cumberlands closes out their dual meet season 5-0 and set their sights on the Mid-South Conference championships, which are set to begin Thursday, February 3, in Kingsport, TN.
