Lexington, KY – The 13th-ranked Patriots men's tennis team posted a 4-0 win over #15 Grace College in their opening match of the NAIA Indoor Tournament. With the win, UC improves to 4-0 on the young season.
The Patriots grabbed the first points of the match in part due to strong doubles play. Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub, the #19 tandem in the NAIA, made quick work of Grace's top pairing by a final of 6-2. Martin Muller and Hung-Ju Wu followed suit with a win of their own at #3 doubles 6-4, giving UC the 1-0 advantage.
Barbier has had no issues in season openers as he has now won four straight, defeating David Sandi at #1 singles 7-6 (5), 7-5 extending the Patriots lead to 2-0. Hung-Ju Wu then made it a 3-0 contest in favor of the Patriots with his win over Ivan Antinori in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 at #6. Christian De La Fuente Nodado closed out the match for UC at #5 as he defeated Fabricio Galvan in straight sets as well 6-3, 7-5.
Mattis Le Montagner, Martin Muller, and Luis Montull all won the first set of their respective matches, however, all three matches went unfinished as the match was clinched.
The Patriots are set to return to action tomorrow in the NAIA National Indoor Invitational as they are slated to take on #9 Union next with the match set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
