Patriots Finish NAIA Indoor Invite With Sweep

Lexington, KY - Facing their second ranked opponent of the weekend, the 16th-ranked Patriots women's tennis team swept #12 Williams Woods 4-0 to place fourth at the NAIA Indoor Invitational, Saturday afternoon. With the win, Cumberlands improves to 3-2 on the season. 

The Owls ended up taking the advantage in doubles play as they grabbed the win at #1 doubles. UC responded by tying up the doubles point as Tessa Gray and Meiri Okuwaki teamed up for a 6-4 win at #2 doubles. The Patriots secured the doubles point and the 1-0 lead in the match as Satsuki Mitani and Johanna Beckamann secured 6-4 win of their own at #3 doubles. 

In singles play, Tomomi Nagao end extending the Patriots lead out to 2-0 with a win at #1 singles as she defeated #12 Zavala in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Fros then made it a 3-0 lead for UC with a win at #5 singles as she grabbed the win due to retirement by her opponent. 

Hana Shimeno shut the door on the match in a convincing way, winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 at #6 to give the Patriots their second straight sweep of the weekend. 

Meiri Okuwaki, Catherin Rae, and Johanna Beckmann were each unable to complete their matches in singles play as Cumberlands had clinched the win. 

The Patriots will have to wait a couple of week until their next match as they are set to take on Mount Vernon Nazarene University on February 12th.
