Baker Dual Results | Indiana Tech Dual Results

Louisville, KY – After facing four ranked opponents, including two in the top-ten, UC finished in eighth place at the NWCA Duals. The Patriots ended the tournament with a record of 1-3 as a team.

Chamira Cooper was the only wrestler for Cumberlands to go undefeated at the duals. She had a 4-0 record, including three tech fall wins where she never gave up a point.

#6 Cumberlands loses to #9 Baker, 25-21
UC started the dual off strong, picking up three wins in the initial matches. Elizabeth Dosado set the tone for the Patriots, earning her first pin since returning to the 101-weight class. Dosado started the match with a snap to single leg, putting her up 2-0. The freshman then landed a head and arm throw that put her opponent on her back for the pin at 1:08.

With the 5-0 team lead, Jaine Stephens used the momentum to double UC's score with a pin of her own in the 109-bout. After the first period Stephens were all tied up at five, but then Stephens blanked her the rest of the way. The Williamsburg, KY native hit a pair of head and arm throw, with the second one being the final blow, pinning her opponent at 5:28.

Alexis Medina, ranked #10, had a tough matchup in the 116-weight class up against ninth ranked Katherine Heath. Medina issued the first points of the match off a single leg move with Heath earning just one point for a 2-1 Medina advantage after period one. Medina did much of the same after the restart hitting three single legs in a row to go up 8-1. Heath earned a two-point takedown herself in the final seconds, but Medina got one more herself to win with a 9-3 decision. The trio of wins put UC up 13-1.

Baker, however, got momentum of their own, picking up five straight wins to put the dual out of reach with still two matches left for a team score of 25-13.

In no easy 170 matchup, 10th ranked Cooper had to wrestle against fourth ranked Elisa Robinson. Cooper immediately picked up points against Robinson, hitting a blast double. Cooper then got three more points in the period to go up 7-0 for period number two. But once again Cooper landed a blast double for the 11-0 tech fall win, marking the first-time all-season Robinson has been shutout in a match.

After going 1-1 on day one, Jesse Kirby got back to her usual ways picking up her team best 17th fall of the season. Kirby wasted no time, getting the fall win at 2:12. Before picking up the pin, Kirby issued multiple single legs and arm bars to be up 8-0. For her final single leg, she was able to get an inside trip to put her opponent on her back.

The two wins for Cooper and Kirby made the team score 25-21 putting UC into the seventh-place match up against Mid-South Conference foe, Indiana Tech.

#6 Cumberlands is defeated by #11 Indiana Tech, 29-17
Once again, UC had a strong showing to kick off the dual. Dosado was able to take down #7 Sydney Kutzke. Dosado went down 0-2 to start the match but then rattled off ten unanswered points from headlocks to give her the 10-2 decision for a 3-1 Patriots lead.

Stephens followed that up with a tech fall win. She dominated the match, giving up just two points over the course of the two periods. Stephens was able to earn 13 points herself, solidifying the tech fall victory with a far ankle pick to keep UC's lead at 7-2.

Indiana Tech then answered back with six consecutive wins to put the dual out of reach before the final two matches with a score of 29-8.

Cooper stayed undefeated for the tournament, picking up her fourth win, extending her overall duals record to 9-0. The Cerritos, CA native once again blanked her opponent for the tech fall win. She earned the majority of her points from her signature blast double for the 10-0 win.

Kirby spent the least amount of time on the mat for her 18th fall of the season. It took the Culpeper, VA native just 36 seconds to pin her opponent after landing a single leg and arm bar. The two final victories for UC finished the dual with a score of 29-17 in favor of the Warriors.

The Patriots will return to the mats for the York Duals in York, NE starting at 9AM on Friday, January 14.
