Boone, NC- Patriots women's swimming & diving team opened the season 2-0 after taking down Lees-McRae 180-106 and UNC Pembroke 175-120. UC finished in first place in seven events and had top five finishes in all 14 events. Cumberlands also collected 17 national provisional cuts, led by
Valentina Zapata Ceballos who notch three.
Hanne te Velthuis started the day placing third in the 50 free as she touched the wall in 24.92, which was good enough for a provisional cut. Te Velthuis followed that swim up with a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle. In that event she clocked a 54.43, which earned another provisional cut. Also, in the 100 free,
Anastasiia Shatalova finished fifth.
The Pats also got second place finishes in the 500 and 1000 free. Jusit Garreta Yuste finished second in the 500, while
Ashley Schoenlein placed second in the 1000.
In the 100 back, UC swept the top three as Ceballos hit the wall first at 59.32 which is the third fastest time in the NAIA this season.
Maria Basto earned a runner-up finish clocking a 59.32, followed by Romy Itzkovich Sacco who touched at 59.79. All three earn provisional cuts. Basto turned around and finished first in the 200 back at a time of 2:10.02, followed by Sacco at 2:11.03. both times were provisional cuts. Izzy Cooksey placed fifth with a time of 2:17.06.
The 100 breast, had provisional cuts from
Kayana Cook and
Abbey Richardson who finished third and fourth place, respectively. Richardson followed with a third-place finish in the 200 breast for another provisional cut.
From there the Patriots finished in first place in their next five events. Starting with Ceballos who finish first at 58.38 and
Filippa Malmstrom was right behind in second with 1:01.35 in the 100 fly. Both were provisional cuts. Also,
Emilia Martinez Morales placed fifth in the event. The 200 fly, Malmstrom touched the wall in 2:17.98 for first place and Yuste touched the wall next with a time of 2:19.18, both were provisional cuts.
Then in the 200 IM, Ceballos, Cooksey, and Sacco hit provisional cuts. Ceballos placed first in a time of 2:11.98, while Cooksey finished in second at a time of 2:16.65. Sacco came in third with a time of 2:16.80.
Basto, Cook, Ceballos, and Te Velthuis placed first in the 400 medley. In the last event of the day, te Veltuis, Shatalova, Stavoy, and Basto finished in first in the 400 free relay.
The divers will head to Sewanee, TN for the Sewanee Invitational on October 28
th. The next day the Pats will host a Tri-Meet against Union and Midway, starting at Noon.
