Bowling Green, KY- Behind a strong season debut, Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira garnered the Mid-South Conference Swimmer of the Week, conference officials announced Monday. It marks the first time this season and the fifth time in his career that the sophomore garnered this honor.Â
Oliveria led the way for the Pats as he achieved two provisional cuts and posted three wins in Cumberlands home opener. The sophomore from Madrid, Spain started his day with a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle as he touched the wall at 46.04, for his first provisional cut. That time put him third fastest time in the NAIA and was five seconds faster than the NAIA provisional standard.
Then in the 200 freestyle he hit his second provisional cut as he finished in first place and touched the wall in 1:42.32. With that time, he is the fourth fastest 200 freestyle swimmer in the NAIA.Â
Gonzalez de Oliveria opened the meet by anchoring UC's winning 200 medley relay. The quartet teamed up to clock a 1:35.17, which was the third fastest time in the NAIA this season.
Cumberlands hits the road as they head to Terre Hauts, IN, for a Quad-Meet on November 5
th starting at 1 PM.
