Patriots Continue to Dominate In MSC Meets With A Win Over Shawnee State

Six NAIA provisional cuts leads the way as the Patriots women's swimming and diving team advances to 8-0 after taking down Shawnee State 182-73. Hanne te Velthuis and Romy Itzkovich Sacco both notched two cuts apiece.

Te Velthuis started her day with a provisional cut and a second-place finish in the 50 freestyle. She finished with a time of 27.81 followed by Riley Cerqueira coming in third (28.81). Next in the 100 free Maria Basto earned pole position with a time of 59.93, te Velthuis was right behind her touching the wall in 1:00.57. While Riley Cerqueira finished off the podium coming in third with a time of 1:03.63. Both Basto and te Velthuis time were good enough for provisional cuts. UC had another sweep of the podium in the 200 free as Judit Garreta Yuste lead the pack with a time of 2:18.05, followed by Emilia Martinez Morales (2:18.39) and Filippa Malmstrom (2:23.19). Then in the 400 free, Aldara Gonzalez Riano pulled away from the pack to finish first in 4:50.37, Elise Weiler was a little over 10 seconds behind her to finish in second (5:03.03). Izzy Cooksey took her only win of the day in the 800 free. She touched the wall in a time of 9:55.76.

Next in the 100 backstroke, Libby Poley came in first with a time of 1:15.20. Then in the 200 back, the Pats swept the podium again, this time Itzkovich Sacco came in first with a time of 2:24.73 for a provision cut. Izzy Cooksey followed with a second-place finish (2:31.69), and Emilia Martinez Morales touched the wall third (2:36.85).

Ashley Schoenlein came in first in both the 100 breaststroke and the 200 breaststroke. In the 100, she edged out the rest of the field and touch the wall first in 1:19.53. Schoenlein came away with a provisional cut in the 200, as she hit the wall first in 2:50.70.

In the butterfly events, starting with the 200 fly, Aurora Stavoy notched a win as she edged out her teammate Aldara Gonzalez Riano with a time of 2:39.51. Gonzalez Riano had a time of 2:40.04. Then in the 100 fly Malmstrom, came in second (1:08.99) and Stavoy placed third (1:09.63). In the 200 IM, the Patriots came away with the top three spots. Itzkovich Sacco finished in first (2:28.26), followed by Basto in second (2:32.10), and Jami Margolen in third (2:48.29).

In the relays the team of Sacco, Kayana Cook, Valentina Zapata Ceballos, and Malmstrom came in first with a time of 4:39.09. The team of Stavoy, te Velthuis, Riley Cerqueira, and Basto) took home first to end the day with a time of 1:53.74.

Cumberlands will take the rest of November off before hitting the road going to Wooster, OH for the College of Wooster Invite on December 1st – December 3rd.
