Patriots Men’s Swimming & Diving Hit 17 NAIA Cuts; Finished 3-0 on the Day

– The Cumberlands men's swimming & diving team achieved 17 NAIA cuts as the recorded three wins as part of a quad dual Saturday afternoon.  The Patriots defeated Rose-Hulman192-96, Bethel (IN) 207-84 and Hanover 232-21 on the day to improve to 6-0 on the season.

Six Patriots achieved multiple NAIA provisional cuts in the meet, while UC placed first in 11 of the 16 events. Leading the way for UC was Ruben Gonzalez de Oliveira, Jokubas Jankauskas, and Kacper Sobieszuk, who notched a pair of wins each.

Gonzalez de Oliveira touched the wall in 21.35 to win the 50 free and achieve his first national cut of the day.  That time is the fourth fastest time in the NAIA this season.  The sophomore followed that up by pulling away from the field and clocking a 46.39 to win the 100 free and earn his second national cut of the meet. 

Jankauskas was dominant in the backstrokes as the Patriots posted one-two finishes in both the 100 and 200 back.  The Siauliai, Lithuania native went 1:53.93 to win the 200 back, which is five seconds faster than the provisional cut and is the fourth fastest time in the country.  He also edged out Ruthiiki Satti in the 100 back as the duo went 51.76 and 51.83, respectively.  Those are the fourth and fifth fastest times in the NAIA this season.  Creed Farthing also achieved a national cut in the 100 back with a time of 54.19, while he was runner-up in the 200 back (2:00.84).

Sobieszuk led a trio of Patriots that earned national cuts in the 100 fly as he notched a winning time of 51.58.  Satti (52.17) and Gabriel Eriksson (53.01) both clipped the NAIA provisional standard.  Sobieszuk notched the third fastest time in the NAIA this season as he clocked a 1:54.89 to win the 200 fly, while Eriksson finished runner-up with a 1:56.69, which ranks sixth.

In the 100 breast both Mikolaj Kala and Nathan Souza achieved provisional cuts.  Kala improved on his season best time going 58.84, while Souza's 59.81 is also a season-best.  Kala followed that up by touching the wall in 2:09.28 to win the 200 breast and clip the provisional standard by three seconds.

Andres Caicedo and Will Gilbert posted Cumberlands final two individual wins on the day.  Caicedo pulled away from the field to win the 200 free with a time of 1:45.60, while Gilbert went 4:51.05 to finish first in the 500 free.
Evan Hawkins notched the final provisional cut in the 400 IM (4:21.34).

The Patriots opened the day winning the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Jankauskas, Leon Irmer, Satti, and Gonzalez de Oliveira teamed up to post a season-best time of 1:34.55.  UC also took first in the 400 free relay as Gonzalez de Oliveria, Satti, Caicedo, and Daniel Ruiz Ramis clocked a 3:10.90, which is the third fastest time in the NAIA this season.

Cumberlands returns to the water Saturday, November 19, when they travel to Portsmouth, OH to take on Shawnee State.  The meet is slated to start at 1 p.m.
