Wooster, OH – The Patriots women's swimming and diving team had a strong opening day at the College of Wooster Invite. The Pats advanced 17 swimmers into the finals for the 50 and 500 freestyle, and the 200 IM, while scoring 565.5 points to end day one in first place.
Preliminary
The day started with six swimmers advancing to the final in the 500 free, while the top three swimmers hit NAIA provisional cuts.
Isabella Cooksey was the fastest Patriots in the event finishing in 5:14.73 for a provisional standard.
Judit Garreta Yuste followed with a time of 5:21.77 for a provisional standard. Both made the "A" finals.
Aldara Gonzalez Riano also hit a provisional standard as she posted a 5:21.98 time,
Elise Weiler followed with a time of 5:28.11, which put them both in the "B" Final. Then earning spots in the "C" final was
Jami Margolen (5:37.28) and Libby Poley (5:39.26).
Then in the 200 IM, UC had all five swimmers advance to the finals, while they all achieved the provisional standard.
Maria Basto edged out
Romina Itzkovich Sacco by 0.28 of a second to earned the top-seed in the finals as they clocked times of 2:08.14 and 2:08.42, respectively. Rounding out the "A" final was
Filippa Malmstrom with a time of 2:10.10 and
Abbey Richardson finishing in 2:13.50. Earning a spot in the "B" Final was
Emilia Martinez Morales as she touched the wall with a time of 2:15.31.
UC finished off the morning session with six swimmers earning a spot in the 50 free finals. In the "A" finals is
Hanne te Velthuis as she notched a 24.42,
Olie Dabney with a time of 24.60, and
Anastasiia Shatalova in 24.62. All those times clipped the NAIA provisional standard. In the "B" finals is
Riley Cerqueira, who also notched a provisional standard with a time of 25.14, and
Kayana Cook as she finished in 25.91.
Magdalena Mayer was featured in the "C" final as she posted a time of 26.17.
Finals
Basto picked up the Patriots first win of the meet as she pulled away from the pack to finish first with a time of 2:07.37. That time puts her as the fastest 200 IM swimmer in the NAIA this season. Sacco was right behind her as she touched the wall in 2:07.98 to finish third, but her time was good enough for second in the NAIA. Malmstrom finished fourth (2:10.33), while Richardson came in fifth (2:11.26). Morales finished first in the "B" final to take home a ninth-place finish at 2:15.79.
In the 50 free, te Velthuis came away with a third-place finish as she finished in 24.30, while Dabney clocked a 24.36 to place fourth. The duo of te Velthuis and Dabney are currently ranked fifth and sixth in the NAIA. Shatalova touched the wall in 24.84 to place seventh in the finals. In the "B" final Cerqueira touched the wall in 25.23 to finished tied for 9
th place, while Cook (25.40) finished in 13
th and Mayer (26.19) finished in 18
th place.
Finally, in the 500 free, Cooksey was the fastest Patriot finishing in third place in 5:13.55. Garreta Yuste touched the wall in 5:25.46 for eighth place. In the "B" final Gonzalez Riano led the pack to come in ninth place with a time of 5:18.33. Weiler (5:30.54) finished in 15
th, while Poley (5:30.07) came in 19
th, and Margolen (5:37.40) finished in 22
nd.
In the 400 medley the team of Basto, Richardson,
Valentina Zapata Ceballos, and Shatalova came in first with a time of 3:54.55, which is the second fastest time in the NAIA. The team of Itzkovich Sacco, Cook, Malmstrom, and Cerqueira finished in third (3:58.14).
Cumberlands will hit the pool tomorrow morning for day two of the College of Wooster Invite. The prelims with start at 10 am followed by diving at 2 pm, and the finals at 6 pm.
