12th Ranked Patriots Notched Two Wins To In First Dual Day

Columbia, KY – The 12th ranked Patriots wrestling team split the day as they went 2-2 in their first dual action of the season. UC's notched their two wins by taking down eighth ranked Marian 38-9 and RV Midway 33-12.

The day started with a win over MSC foe Midway. Eighth ranked Austin Franco started the dual off with a 2:40 fall over Andrew Vogeler in the 125 matchup, to take a 6-0 lead. Then in the 133 match, Matteo Vargo notched a six-point fall victory over Questapha Lewis in 1:11. Midway responded with two three-point wins to cut into the Pats lead, 12-6. Then in the 157 match, Ty Lehman got a Tech Fall to win over Daylon Stafford. In that match, Lehman notched a takedown and a four-point near fall in the opening round. In period two, he got a takedown. He followed with another takedown and two four-point near falls in the third period for the 19-1 win. Next was the 165 match, where 15th ranked O'Brian Black pushed the UC lead to 20-6 with a 7-6 decision win over Abe Hafez. Black notched two takedowns and a reversal in the match. In the 174 matchup, Tobias Garrison picked up a Major Decision win over Colton McMahan. In that match, Garrison notched two takedowns in each period on his way to the 16-7 win. The Patriots Harold Gilmore picked up a forfeit win in the 184 matchup. Then Jovon Howe took down 13th-ranked Isaiah McDougal by a 7-4 decision. Howe got started early with an escape followed by a takedown. Then in the second period he got an escape and then another takedown to win the bout. Midway ended the dual with a win in the 285 match, but UC came out victorious 33-12.

8th Marian (PDF)

UC got off to a hot start as they got 29 points from the first five matches. Adonis Boyd started the dual with a 4:59 fall over Ty Haskins in the 125 match. Then Trenton Pagaduan notched a three-minute fall over Dylan McKelvey in the 133 match. The 141-matchup had seventh-ranked Bryce Nickel get a Tech Fall to win over Landon Bertsch. Nickel controlled the match, notching two takedowns in the opening round, followed by an escape and a takedown in the second period. Nickel then got five takedowns plus a four-point nearfall in the third period for the 21-5 victory. Derrick Bannister took down Ian Heath by fall in 2:41 in the 149 match. While Michael Bone picked up a 6:49 fall in the 157 match over Zach Wilson. The Patriots then got nine points from the next three matches. Starting with Charlie Friedenreich in the 165 match, who made a late rally in the third period to get the 5-2 decision wins. In that third period, Friedenreich got an escape followed by a takedown, plus an extra point for ride time. In 174, TJ Huber got a 9-8 decision win over Jeff Dunasky. In that matchup, Huber notched three points in the opening period, followed by an escape and takedown in the second period. After getting taken down in the final period, Huber made an escape and then got a takedown to take the lead and get the win. Gilmore followed with another decision win over Will Stewart in the 184 match. Gilmore got an early takedown, then in the second period, he got a two-point near fall. In the final period, Gilmore picked up two escapes to get the 7-3 win. Marian won the 197 and 285 matches, but the Pats won the dual 38-9.

9th Menlo (PDF)

The Pats experienced their first loss to Menlo, while picking up five wins. Franco started the dual with a 6-2 decision win over 10th-ranked Cristian Vasquez.  Franco got the first points of the match as he notched a takedown. In the second period, he got another takedown. Then in the third period, he made an escape, and he received an extra point for ride time. Menlo took the 133 bout by a major decision. Then in the 141 match, 13th-ranked Chasen Brown got the 6-2 decision win over 25th-ranked Nicholas Camacho. In that bout, Brown notched an escape, takedown, two-point near fall, and a riding time point. After dropping the 149 match, Lehman got a major decision win in the 157 match, which put the Pats up 10-7. Lehman controlled the match from the beginning. He notched a takedown in the opening period, followed by an escape and a takedown in the second period. Lehman picked up three takedowns and an escape to get the 12-4 win. In the next match, Black would extend the UC lead to 13-7 with a 4-0 decision. In this 165 bout, Black notched a takedown in the opening period, followed by an escape in the second. Black got an extra point for riding time to win. The Oaks tied the dual at 13-13 before Gilmore picked up a six-point injury win over 14th-ranked Isaiah Morales. Menlo then picked up two major decision wins to get the 21-19 win.

5th Indiana Tech (PDF)

The Warriors controlled this dual, winning 30-10, but three Patriots picked up wins. Boyd notched a 17-7 major decision win in the 125 bout. Boyd notched three takedowns and an escape in the opening period, followed by another escape to start the second. A few seconds later, he notched a takedown that led to a four-point near fall. In the final period, Boyd got his fifth takedown of the match to get the win. UC's next win came in the 165 bout, where Black got a 2-0 win over Landon Buchanan. In this tightly contested match, Black got the only point of the bout from an escape in the third period. Black's second point came from riding time. Then in the 174 match, Huber took down Trevor Stuyvenberg 6-2. Huber's six points came by way of two reversals and a takedown.

Cumberlands will head down to Southeastern on December 17th to participate in the Fire Duals. That will end the 2022 portion of the season. 2023 will start with the NAIA/ NWCA Multi-Divisional National Duals on the 6th and 7th of January.
