Williamsburg, KY – To open up the dual season for Cumberlands, the team started with a clean sweep, going 4-0 at the Patriot Duals on day one of the competition. UC finished first in their group and will now be in the top Blue Bracket for the final day.
On the day, the Patriots had five wrestlers go undefeated in
Elizabeth Dosado,
Dymond Guilford,
Olivia Hogan,
Jesse Kirby, and
Alexis Medina.
CUMBERLANDS WINS OVER LIMESTONE, 28-16
After picking up a pair of wins from forfeits, the score was 10-5 in favor of UC heading into the 130 bout. Hogan scored the first point in the match and did not look back. She rattled off nine points in the first period with her opponent only getting one. Then just seven seconds into period two, Hogan finished her off with a two-point takedown to earn the 11-1 tech fall, making the team score 14-6.
Madyson Dow followed up that match, with impressive one herself. She earned two, four-point takedowns with the second one putting her opponent on her back. Dow secured the pin at 5:22 pushing the team score to 19-6.
The Saints picked up back-to back falls brining the score to 19-16. But in the 170-match, Guilford sealed the win for UC. She was only on the mat for under a minute, earning the 10-0 tech fall to make it 23-16.
Kirby made it another quick match for Cumberlands, earning the fall at 1:02. She used a four-point takedown and put her opponent on her back to finalize the team score at 28-16 in favor of the Pats.
CUMBERLANDS DEFEATS WILLIAMS PENN, 26-15
A forfeit to start the dual gave UC the lead when Medina stepped on the mats for the 116 matchup. Medina wasted no time, getting the 10-0 tech fall in under a minute to make it a 10-0 UC lead.
A tech fall for the Statesmen at 123 had the score at 9-4 in favor of UC for Hogan's match. She kept the trend of quick matches going. Before winning from pin at 2:29, Hogan racked up eight points and blanking her opponent.
The score now tied up at 14-14, the 155-bout had one of the closest contests on the day. She started off with a pushout, but her opponent answered back with a two-point takedown. Again, Moore got a pushout, but this time her opponent earned back-to-back two-point takedowns for the 6-2 advantage heading into the second period. The two wrestlers battled, not giving the other an advantage. Then with just over a minute left, Moore lifted her opponent in the air for the four-point takedown. Those were the only points scored resulting in a 6-6 scoreline,but with Moore's four-point takedown she won on criteria or the decision win moving the score to 17-15.
The 170-match for Guilford was much of the same, but even faster. She once again rattled off the 10-0 tech win but with this time in just 22 seconds.
Guilford nearly edged out Kirby for fastest win in the dual. In the 191-match Kirby got three, two-point takedowns and twisted her opponent on her back for the fall at 29 seconds. She earned five points for UC and gave them the 26-15 victory.
CUMBERLANDS DOMINATES HIRAM, 36-5
Winning her first two matches by forfeit, Dosado finally got to wrestle and she showed urgency. Dosado notched three, two-point takedowns and even hit a four-point takedown to win with a 10-0 tech fall.
UC earned win via forfeit in the 116-weight class, putting
Hailey Foster on the mats for the 123-match. She had a back-and-forth contest, with them both alternating takedowns, but Foster sealed the win by earning the final four points in the match for the 10-7 decision win.
With the score now at 12-1, Hogan took to the mats and earned ten points all in the first period for the tech fall win. This set up a 16-1 lead when
Madyson Dow faced off in the 136-weight class. Just 11 seconds into the match she launched at her opponent for the four-point takedown. This propelled her opponent on her back for the fall win at only 24 seconds.
Hiram earned a 14-4 tech victory and then a forfeit win for UC made the score 27-5 for Guilford. She once again earned a 10-0 tech fall, but this time she earned a four-point takedown and three, two-pointers, but once again in incredible speed at 33 seconds into the match. The final match was a forfeit for UC making the final score 36-5.
CUMBERLANDS BLANKS BREWTON-PARKER, 43-0
Dosado set the tone for the dual earning 10 quick points for the tech fall win and Medina matched it in the 116-match giving the Patriots an early 10-0 lead.
A trio of forfeit wins for UC made the score, 18-0. Dow got on the mats for the 143-match. Impressively she picked up a pair of four-point takedowns, one to end the first period and one to start the second. Dow then got the fall win at 3:36 to increase the lead to 23-0.
Moore followed it with a fall win of her own. She was up 5-3 in the first period and then saw an opportunity to take her opponent down. Moore lifted her opponent in the air, for the rare five-point takedown. This leveraged her to put her opponent on her back for the fall at 2:35.
UC got two more forfeit wins to hold the Barons scoreless for the 43-0 victory to finish off day one.
The Patriots had another team competing in the tournament.
MaQuoia Bernabe in the 191-weight class was the only one on the squad to go undefeated. She earned two fall wins (2:32 and 4:23) as well as a 10-0 tech fall win.
Chamira Cooper had two wins both via fall (2:00, 0:47).
Lena Taylor and
Dylan Hernandez each got one win, both from falls.
UC will return to the mats, tomorrow, Saturday December 3 for day two of the Patriot Duals. Competition is set for a 10AM ET start.
