Williamsburg, KY – The 8
th ranked University of the Cumberlands women's wrestling team welcomed the top-two teams in the nation on Thursday afternoon for a Mid-South Conference tri-dual. Both #1 Campbellsville and #2 Life faced off first in the UC Volleyball Gym before taking on the Patriots. Cumberlands was defeated by both teams, first by Campbellsville by score of 35-12 and then by Life with a score of 41-6.
UC picked up two wins in their dual against the Tigers with them coming in the final two matches. First in the 170-matchup
Chamira Cooper had one of the most electrifying matches of the night. She wasted no time racking up points, hitting her first of three doubles within the first 30 seconds. In her final double, Cooper forced her opponents on her back, solidifying the win by pin at 1:20. The victory pushed the Cerritos, CA native's dual record to 13-0.
In the very next match
MaQuoia Bernabe faced off against #12 Brianna Staebler. Left out of the latest NAIA poll, Bernabe made sure to make a big impact in her first dual match of the season. Staebler scored the first two points of the match, but Bernabe was not derailed and had an answer of two points of her own. She got a front headlock and used the chin whip to put Staebler on her back. At 1:39 Bernabe got the fall win, marking her third of the season at her second fastest time.
The final match of the night featured #2 Gabrielle Hamilton against #5
Jesse Kirby of Cumberlands, making it one of the best matchups of the entire tri-dual. Hamilton had already won earlier in the evening with a pin to solidify the win over Campbellsville, but Kirby came ready to face her highest ranked opponent of the season. Hamilton picked up the first point of the match with a push out. That would be all Hamilton scored in the bout. Kirby used a snatch single to pick up four points. The Culpeper, VA native then used a turn to pick up two-points and put Hamilton on her back for the pin at 2:37. Not only is the first time Hamilton has been pinned this season, but it also marks her first overall loss of the year.
With the two losses, UC moves to 6-8 on the season with a 0-3 Mid-South Conference record.
The Patriots will finish out their MSC regular season when they travel to Mount Vernon, GA to face 19
th ranked Brewton-Parker on February 9 starting at 6PM.
