Williamsburg, KY - A month and a half after sweeping the Owls in the NAIA Women's National Indoor Invitational, UC's women's tennis program does it again. Cumberlands hosted #16 William Woods Wednesday afternoon with the Patriots winning in convincing fashion with a 4-0 victory to move to 10-3 on the year.
While doubles play was a hard-fought battle, it was one that saw the Patriots end up on top. Johanna Beckmann and Satsuki Mitani got things started off for UC in the #3 spot with the first win of the evening in a 6-3 victory. Tomomi Nagao and Mikeala Fros played their first match of the year out of the #1 spot and they didn't seem to mind. They ended up competing at #2 doubles, having to fight for their win but still finished on top with the 7-5 win, giving UC the 1-0 lead.
Meiri Okuwaki made it a 2-point lead for the Patriots in the #2 spot during singles play with her claiming the first win. Meiri ended up with a bit of a challenge on her hands in the first set with her counterpart nabbing four points but Okuwaki still came out on top 6-4. The native of Saitama, Japan had an easier time in her second set as she won 6-2. Tomomi Nagao added a point to UC's lead after Okuwaki, making it 3-0 in favor of the Patriots. Tomomi was in complete control of her contest as she was able to dispatch of her Owl opponent in a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Catherine Rae finished things off for UC, helping them claim their seventh win in their last eight matches. Rae didn't quite get off to the sort of start she wanted to, dropping the first set. She responded well, though, as she was able to take the next two stanzas to grab the win. Catherine made things look easy in her two victorious sets, winning 6-3 in the second and then 6-2 in the third to close things out.
Johanna Beckmann, Hana Shimeno, and Fan Shiau all saw their singles matches go unplayed as the Patriots were able to clinch the win before they began play.
