#13 Patriots Knock Off #20 Cumberland

Williamsburg, KY - Cumberlands continues their strong play as they have now won five matches in a row with the past four coming via the sweep. The Patriots defeated #20 Cumberland 7-0 Sunday afternoon at the UC Tennis Courts.

Doubles play began the way Cumberlands was hoping as they grabbed the win at #1. Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub defeated Jackson Vaughan and Hugues N'Goma handedly with the Patriot's top tandem taking home the 6-0 win. The Phoenix were able to knot things up at the #2 spot with a 6-2 victory before Martin Muller and Hung-Ju Wu helped Cumberlands grab a 1-0 advantage at the #3 with a 6-1 win.

Barbier kept on rolling once singles play began with him making it a 2-0 lead for UC in dominant fashion. He and N'Goma once again saw each other with Martin getting the better of the matchup again, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. Martin Muller played as the #3 and followed Barbier up with an easy win of his own to make it a 3-0 lead for the Patriots. Muller won his first set 6-1 before finishing things off in convincing fashion with a 6-3 victory.

Mattis Le Montagner clinched the win for UC in the #2 spot with a pair of exceptional wins that saw him defeat Cumberland's Adrijan Hržíc. Le Montagner was able to stay in the lead throughout his contest as he was able to cruise to the win by a final tally of 6-4, 6-4 to give the Patriots their fifth straight win.

Christian de la Fuente Nodado was next to finish for UC in the #5 spot. He battled his way to a 6-4, 6-3 win with Luis Montull and Hung-Ju Wu finishing behind to close out the day. Montull played as the #4 and had quite a fight on his hands. After winning the first set 7-5, Luis found himself on the other end of that score to knot things at one apiece. He then won the tiebreaker 10-6 to keep hopes of the sweep alive. Wu made sure to make it a reality with his win at #6, winning with ease by a final of 6-1, 6-0.

The Patriots sit a 11-3 entering the new week with a 2-0 record in conference with both victories coming from sweeps. They'll try to break out the brooms for the third straight time against MSC opponents on Tuesday when they play #10 Lindsey Wilson. UC will travel to Columbia, KY for that matchup with a game time of 1:00 p.m.
