Cumberlands Compete in Charlotte at First Outdoor Meet of the Year

Charlotte, NC – Cumberlands traveled down to North Carolina for the Charlotte 49er Classic on Friday where they competed in eight events on the first day on contests. Lucas Lambo posted the Patriots lone top-10 finish on day one, as UC will look to add to that total tomorrow on the final day.
 
Lambo competed in the hammer throw Friday afternoon where he posted a tenth-place finish. This is an outdoor only event, and Lambo started the season with a solid 43.92m throw. Jhawan Horton was the 16th place finisher in the hammer with a throw of 41.01m.
 
The Patriots also competed in the high jump and javelin throw for their field events on Friday. Three Pats entered the javelin throw, two of which for the first time in their career. Chandler Powell, who threw in this event last season, posted a 28.92m throw in the first heat of the day. Freshman Chaz Jarboe and Cole MacMurray threw the javelin for the first time and reached distances of 18.81m and 19.24m respectively.
 
Powell also competed in the high jump alongside teammate Andy Tchyombo. Chandler cleared a height of 1.60m on his second attempt of the day for 22nd. Andy finished two spots ahead of this after clearing 1.70m. Tchyombo also raced in the 110m hurdles in Charlotte, taking 18th in the event. His time of 16.02 secured him this top-20 finish.
 
UC placed three sprinters in the 100m dash on Friday. Brandon Green led the way as he crossed the finish line in 11.60 seconds. Alex Miller and Jakob Woods were Cumberlands other two competitors, finishing neck and neck with times of 11.94 and 12.01.
 
The 400m dash also featured three Patriots. Justin Fabela and Elohim Bando were the first two UC finishers on the day. Fabela ran his single lap in 52.56 seconds while Bando finished in 54.06. Evan McCrickard rounded out Cumberlands runners in this event, with a 54.68 finish.
 
Two distance events completed day one for UC. DeShawn Crowe was the lone Patriot in the 1500m run, finishing his race in 4:23.60. The 5k was the final event of the day and Kyle Woodward led the Patriot finishers in this long race. Woodward ran a 15:47.05 while Kevin Mengich and Zach Pennington paced times of 16:18.53 and 18:32.77.
 
Cumberlands will finish their weekend tomorrow at the final day of the 49er classic. Throws are set to begin at 10:00 AM tomorrow, while the first race is scheduled for 12:00 PM.
