Women’s Tennis Drops Home Opener to Oilers

Williamsburg, KY- The Patriots saw their six-game win streak come to an end Wednesday afternoon as they were defeated by the University of Findlay. UC moves to 7-3 on the year after the 4-3 defeat.

Doubles play did not go the Patriots way with them loosing all three of their matches. Tomomi Nagao and Mikaela Fros were defeated 6-4 as the #1 duo while Meiri Okuwaki and Tessa Gray followed suit at #2. While Johanna Beckmann and Satsuki Mitani made their counterparts work a little harder, they ultimately fell as well with the Oilers claiming the first point.

The Patriots had a rebuttal for finding themselves down as they ended up winning three straight singles matches. Nagao claimed the first win with ease, dominating Findlay's Samantha Sweet at #1 in a 6-1, 6-0 win to give Tomomi her ninth straight singles win and her 60th win in singles play for her career.

Johanna Beckmann made it a 2-1 lead for Cumberlands in the #4 spot with a convincing win of her own. Beckmann made quick work of her opponent in the 6-2, 6-1 victory while Meiri Okuwaki grabbed the last of the trio of wins for UC. Okuwaki had a tough time with the Oiler's Laura Brito in the first set, winning 6-4 but made things look easy in the second with a 6-1 win.

Findlay closed the gap and made it a 3-2 contest in favor of the Patriots with a win at #6. Fan Shiau came into the match riding a four-match win streak but saw that snapped at the bottom of Cumberlands' lineup by a score of 6-2, 6-3. The Oilers then evened thins up at three apiece with a win at #2 singles with Findlay's Zuzanna Krygier fought hard against Catherine Rae to claim the win by a slim 6-4, 7-5 margin.

The deciding matchup of the game came at the #5 spot with Hana Shimeno going toe-to-toe with Emily Hadler. The Oliers won the first stanza 6-1, but Shimeno roared back in the second by a score of 7-6 to force a deciding third set. The final canto of the game proved to belong to Findlay with Hadler defeating Hana 6-2 to take the win.

The Patriots will look to rebound on Saturday when they match up with the Midland Warriors. That will be played at the UC Tennis Complex in Williamsburg, KY with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
