Williamsburg, KY - Cumberlands' women's tennis team moves to 11-5 on the season after their loss to Austin Peay Thursday afternoon. UCÂ battled throughout but to no avail as the Governors were able to take the 7-0 win.
Doubles player belonged to Austin Peay as they won two of the three contests to take the first point of the match. Johanna Beckmann and Satsuki Mitani saw their bout come to an end at #3 first with them falling to Austin Peay's Yu-Hau Cheng and Martina Paladini-Jennings 6-0. Tomomi Nagao and Mikaela Fros were next to finish, falling in their contest as well by a count of 6-4 as UC's top tandem.
UC was able to grab one win before doubles play came to an end as Tessa Gray and Meiri Okuwaki was able to grab the victory at the #2 spot. The Patriot's duo had a tough fight on their hands throughout the contest, but were able to stay in front. They started off finding themselves down 2-1, but rallied back to make it a 5-2 count in their favor before securing the win.
Similar to doubles, singles play went Austin Peay's way as well. The #2 spot was first to finish with Okuwaki finding herself on the wrong side of the scorecard, falling 6-2, 6-1. Catherine Rae was next to finish at #3 singles with she being defeat by a count of 6-3, 6-1 to give the Governors a 3-0 advantage. They then secured the win with Tomomi Nagao falling at #1 spot. Denise Torrealba was the one to secure the victory for the Governors in her win over Nagao, ending UC's top player's 13-match win streak.
Fan Shaiu's match was next to finish up with her playing at the #6 spot with her falling 6-4, 6-3. Shiau hung around with her Governor counterpart for much of the match, but was never able to pull off a run to try and take the advantage. Hana Shimeno's match at #5 made it a 5-0 lead for Austin Peay with her unable to get the win. Shimeno played hard in her first set as she fell by a count of 7-5 but then lost by a tally of 6-2 in the second to bring her day to an end. Johanna Beckmann's match in the #4 spot finished out the afternoon with her falling as well 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).
The Patriots will have a quick turnaround before their next match as they're set to play again tomorrow against MSC foe Freed-Hardeman. UC will be hosting the Lions in that matchup with the two teams set to begin play at the UC Tennis Courts at 1:00 p.m.
