Nagao Reaches Milestone in Sweep of Wildcats

Williamsburg, KY - UC's women's tennis team put a bow on the final full week of action in the month of March in more than one way Saturday afternoon. The Patriots were able to grab the sweep over the opposing Bethel Wildcats to move to 13-5 on the season while Tomomi Nagao recorded her 64th victory in singles play, giving her sole possession of the most in program history.

Nagao got doubles play started off alongside Mikaela Fros as the #1 tandem with a win as they disposed of Tijana Svitlica and Marina Zotelli 6-4. Their match was the most competitive among the three doubles bouts with Meiri Okuwaki and Tessa Gray winning 6-3 in the #2 spot while Johanna Beckmann and Satsuki Mitani finished things off with a 6-0 win of their own as UC's #3 to help the Patriots grab the first point.

Just like in doubles, Tomomi acted as the #1 for Cumberlands once singles play commenced. She was able control the tempo of her match and force her opponent to have to move around the court with every volley which eventually spelled a win for Nagao. After winning the first set 6-3, the Gifu, Japan native got the win with a 6-2 victory to move UC's lead out to 2-0 while giving her win number 64 for her singles career at UC to become the winningest player in program history.

Meiri Okuwaki pushed the Patriot's lead out to 3-0 as the #2 with her having no problem against her Wildcat counterpart. Okuwaki was in complete control from begging to end during her contest as she grabbed the 6-2, 6-0 win. Catherine Rae was next to finish her day with her clinching the win at #3. Rae had the most competitive of all the singles matches, but the final result was no different from the others as she grabbed win number 10 on the season. Catherine fought with Bethel's Marina Zotelli throughout the first canto with her being able to edge out her opponent to win 7-5 before dominating in the second set 6-0.

Domination was the name of the game for the final three matches of singles for UC. The #4, 5, and 6 spots for Cumberlands didn't let up one bit despite the win already being claimed as they did not allow a single point to be scored against them. Johanna Beckmann was the first Patriot to register the flawless win in the #4 spot while Hana Shimeno followed behind with a shutout of her own at #5 with Fan Shiau competing in the #6 spot, closing things out with a third-straight 6-0 win.

Cumberlands improves to 13-5 on the season with a 4-1 mark in the conference with this victory over the Bethel Wildcats. UC will look to claim conference win number five in their next contest when they take on Campbellsville. The Patriots are set to host the Tigers Wednesday, March 30th, with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
