Women’s Tennis Ranked 15th in Coaches’ Poll

4/13/2022 12:22:00 PM

Kansas City, MO. - Cumberlands' women's tennis program checks in at 15 in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Poll, announced Wednesday morning. The Patriots tallied a total of 214 points to be one of the five Mid-South teams named to the poll.

The Patriots have been playing some of their best tennis of late, winning their last six matches and eight of their last 10. UC has played their way to a 17-5 record on the season overall with a 8-1 mark in conference to go along with a program-high 14 sweeps to date.

Meiri Okuwaki and Tessa Gray have been the stalwart for Cumberlands during doubles play, going 17-3 on the season overall with a 8-1 record against MSC foes. The tandem has played as UC's number #2 duo for the majority of the season, acting as the swing team that helps the Patriots win the first point more often than not as Okuwaki and Gray have clinched the doubles point in all but three of UC's wins. They've been on a tear of late as well, winning each of their last nine contests while giving up just two points in their last four matches.

Okuwaki has been just as strong in singles play as she has been in doubles, going 14-4 when solo with all but one of her matches coming in the #2 spot. She and Tomomi Nagao have spearheaded UC's singles lineup at the top with Nagao exclusively playing as the #1 with a 18-1 record on the year to tie her career-high for singles wins in a campaign. The Patriot's lineup has proved to be much deeper than just those two, however, and that has certainly been the case of late with five players currently owning win streaks of five or higher.

Leading the national poll was Georgia Gwinnett with 374 points and 14 first-place votes with Keiser with 362 points in second and Indiana Wesleyan in third with 345 points.

The women's team will resume play today as they're set to host Marian in their final home match of the 2022 campaign. They will then wrap up the season on Friday when they travel to Georgetown to take on the Tigers beginning at 1:00 p.m.
