UC Falls To Blue Raiders in Title Match

Bowling Green, KY - After sweeping both Georgetown and Cumberland, the Patriots found themselves tasked with Lindsey Wilson in the Mid-South Championship contest. The two teams met Sunday evening at Buchanon Park with the Blue Raiders ending up on top in the end by a final of 4-1.

Doubles play did not go the way Cumberlands was hoping as they ended up falling behind going into singles. Despite their best efforts, the Patriots were unable to come away with the win to begin the match, losing two out of the three doubles bouts. Martin Barbier and Eric Banoub were the first pair to see their contest come to an end with them playing out of the #2 spot. They matched up with Lindsey Wilson's Aleksa Ciric and Jan Silhavy making for a major matchup as both duos are ranked on the ITA's top-25 doubles teams with Barbier and Banoub at 23 while Ciric and Silhavy stand at 21. The two tandems battled back-and-forth as expected with the Blue Raiders taking it in the end 6-4.

UC ended up having a rebuttal and managed to knot things up at 1-1 in doubles thanks to Martin Muller and Hung-Ju Wu. Muller and Wu played as Cumberlands' top tandem in this one, marking the first time they've played at #1 this season. The unfamiliar position did not seem to faze them as they collected the win by a tally of 6-3.

The #3 spot ended up being the deciding contest in doubles with Mattis Le Montagner and Luis Montull going for the Patriots while Tiago Almedia and Jopp van Malderen competed for the Blue Raiders. Much like Barbier and Banoub's bout, this one was a tight affair that saw the two sides trade points. Also like Martin and Eric's match, Lindsey Wilson found a way to move out in front and take the contest and the first point.

Unfortunately, singles play did not begin the way UC was hoping either as they dropped the first decision. Martin Barbier was the first to finish for Cumberland when going solo, playing as the team's #2. He found himself matched up with Jan Silhavy who finds himself ranked 26th per the ITA while Barbier ranks 29th, making for a big-time contest. Martin did all he could to try to keep pace with his opponent, but in the end Silhavy ended up taking the match 6-3, 6-4 to move the Blue Raiders in front 2-0.

The Patriots managed to cut the deficit in half with the next decision as Hung-Ju Wu grabbed a win out of the #6 spot. Wu has been a steady presence for Cumberlands all season and he proved to be once again in this one with him helping the team try and keep pace. Hung-Ju was in complete control of his contest throughout as he never trailed at any point in time on his way to the 6-0, 6-3 win.

That would be the only win UC could muster as they dropped two more matches to bring their day to an end. Mattis Le Montagner ended up taking the loss at #1 to 34th ranked Aleksa Ciric while Martin Muller fell to Nicolas Torrealba at #3. After losing the first set 6-2, Mattis battled in the second in hopes of forcing a third canto, but was unsuccessful despite his best efforts in the 7-5 loss. Muller battled to the very end in his own match, but came up short as well as he fell 6-3, 6-4 to bring the match to a close.

The Patriots are now 22-5 on the season with a 9-4 mark in neutral site contests. The Patriots will take some time off to regroup as they now set their sights on the NAIA National Tournament. UC will look to qualify for the tournament and travel to Mobile, AL with competition starting on May 17th.
