Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Patriots Claim MSC Championship with Win Over Lindsey Wilson

Bowling Green, KY - UC's women's tennis program faced off against the Blue Raiders Sunday afternoon in the Mid-South Tournament title match with Cumberlands coming out on top. After falling to Lindsey Wilson earlier in the year, the Patriots got their revenge in the sweetest way possible as they claimed the program's first conference title in over 20 years. UC fought hard to grab the doubles point and carried that momentum into singles play where they dominated on their way to the 4-1 win.

Doubles play began with the Patriots getting the upper hand as they claimed the first win out of the #3 spot. Meiri Okuwaki and Tessa Gray played as UC's #3 for the first time this season with it not fazing them one bit as they went on to grab the win. The Patriots' dynamic duo won their 13th straight decision to get things started for Cumberlands with them facing Lindsey Wilson's Anastasiia Ivanchenko and Parisa Rachdanone and handling them with ease in the 6-2 win.

Satsuki Mitani and Fan Shiau were next to finish their doubles set as they played out of the #2 spot for the Patriots. Like Gray and Okuwaki, Satsuki and Fan ended up on the right side of the score in their contest with them claiming the win to give Cumberlands their first point of the match. This was just Mitani and Shiau's second match playing in tandem, but they looked very comfortable together as they grabbed the win over their Blue Raider counterpart by a tally of 6-4 to make it a 1-0 advantage.

Meiri Okuwaki picked up right where she left off once singles play began with her winning her singles match, making it a 2-0 lead for the Patriots. Okuwaki was tasked with Lindsey Wilson's Lucia Mora and was able to handle her assignment with ease as she claimed the first singles point by a count of 6-1, 6-1.

UC was able to extend their lead to 3-0 with a win at #5 as Johanna Beckmann came away with the convincing win. Beckmann grabbed her eighth straight win in singles play with her defeat of Parisa Rachdanone as the Patriots inched closer to the win. Johanna was in complete control from the word go of her contest while grabbing a 6-2 win in the first set before going on to continue to dominate in a 6-1 win in the second stanza.

The Blue Raiders ended up cutting into UC's lead after a win for them at the #4 spot. The Patriot's Hana Shimeno battled hard, but ultimately fell to Lindsey's Darija Mladenovic 6-1, 6-4 to make it a 3-1 game in favor of Cumberlands.

The match came to a conclusion with a win at #1 for UC. The now two-time MSC Player of the Year, Tomomi Nagao, grabbed the deciding win of the bout with her contest being a real fight. Nagao was up against Alexandra Parra who is currently ranked 39th per the ITA and in their prior meeting this year during the regular season, Tomomi got the win with her repeating that this time around.

Parra came out of the gates and won the first set 6-4 before Nagao regrouped and won the second and third cantos. It seemed as if the 10th ranked player per the ITA got stronger as the match went along, adjusting to what her Blue Raider counterpart was doing with every point. After coming back to win the second set 6-3, Nagao shut Parra out in the deciding stanza 6-0 to clinch the win and put the Patriots on top.

With this win Cumberlands' women's tennis program collects their third ever Mid-South Conference title and the first since 2000. The Patriots do so with now a 22-5 record on the season, going 9-1 in conference play and 9-2 in neutral site contests. It has been a year for the record books for the Patriots in terms of both player and team success and they add to that as they bring home the banner.
