Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Patriots Dominate SSU to Close Out Week

Portsmouth, OH - Women's tennis put a bow on the first full week of April with a lop-sided win over MSC foe Shawnee State Saturday afternoon via the sweep. It was as dominant an effort as Cumberlands has had as they had four singles matches go by with the Bears unable to register a point. With the Patriots beginning to see their regular season close out they're ending things as hot as can be, collecting their sixth straight win in the 7-0 victory.

Tomomi Nagao and Johanna Beckmann set the tone from the word 'go' with their win in doubles play at #1. Nagao and Beckmann had a very easy time with their Bear counterpart on their way to a 6-1 victory while Meiri Okuwaki and Tessa Gray had an even easier go of it at the #2 spot with a 6-0 win to give UC the first point of the match. Mikaela Fros and Satsuki Mitani wrapped up doubles with an unceremonious win of their own as the #3 as they defeated their SSU opponent 6-2.

Tomomi picked up right where she left off when singles play began with a flawless win to make it a 2-0 lead for Cumberlands. Nagao was the definition of dominant in her contest with her unwilling to give up a point on her way to win number six in a row with the 6-0, 6-0 effort. Okuwaki followed behind Nagao as the #2 with a win in similar fashion as she also grabbed the 6-0, 6-0 win to make it a 3-0 advantage for UC.

There was no slowing down going deeper into singles play as Johanna Beckmann garnered her own flawless win. Hers came as the Patriot's #3 and handed Cumberlands the win with her victory making it 4-0. Beckmann was in complete control throughout her bout, sending crip shots her counterpart's way time after time, on her way to the 6-0, 6-0 win.

The back third of UC's lineup did not let up as Hana Shimeno grabbed a 6-0, 6-4 win at #4 with Fan Shiau going on to win 6-0, 6-0 herself as the team's #5 while Satsuki Mitani wrapped things up at the #6 with a 6-0, 6-1 win to close out one of the more dominant efforts put together in program history.

Cumberlands ends the week 17-5 overall and 8-1 in conference play, extending their win streak to six with each of those victories coming against Mid-South opponents. The Patriots will take a little time off before their next contest as they are set to host Marian in the team's final home match of the season on Wednesday, April 13th, with a start time of 1:00 p.m.
