Williamsburg, KY – The Patriots had a strong first day at the MSC Outdoor Championships today. On their home track UC put together a multitude of solid performances, including a gold medal finish out of
Tristan Petrey in the pole vault.
Petrey, who won the MSC indoor pole vault competition, goes back-to-back with a vault of 4.66m. This not only earned the sophomore first place, but was also a new conference record. Four other Patriots scored in this event as well.
Cole MacMurray earned the bronze with a personal record vault of 3.80m.
Kade Slusser,
Chaz Jarboe, and
Jakob Woods finished fifth through seventh to score for UC as well. Slusser vaulted 3.65m, Jarboe cleared 3.35m, and Woods matched his career best of 3.20m.
Chandler Powell was the final patriot in this event, clearing a personal best height of 2.75m for ninth.
Jhawan Horton led the throwers with a second-place finish in the hammer throw. Horton's first attempt of the day went 47.24m for a new personal best.
Carter Hemingway fought for a scoring position, placing seventh with a 39.34m throw, a massive PR for him as well.
Heath Rexroat also joined the PR club in the hammer on Sunday after a 34.50m toss, placing tenth.
The final top-three finish of the day came in the long jump where
Matthew Chavers leaped to a second–place finish. The sophomore's first attempt of 7.13m proved to be enough for a spot ont he podium. He was the lone patriot in this event.
Cumberlands found success in the preliminary rounds of multiple events on Sunday.
Miguel Reis earned a spot in the finals of the 200m and 400m dashes with two huge PR's that were also national qualifying performances. In the 400m Reis sprinted to a 48.27 finish, just two hundredths of a second away from an "A" standard, earning fifth place. The senior raced to a third place finish in the 200m, clocking a "B: cut time of 21.56.
Ryan Long's career performance secured his spot in the finals of the 200m dash. He posted a 21.74 finish for fifth.
Ken Cobb and
Matthew Chavers were the next UC finishers, placing 10
th and 14
th while
Jeremy Slaughter and
Evan McCrickard posted PR times of 22.75 and 22.89 for 18
th and 19
th.
Demarquez Brown just missed out on the finals after a ninth place finish in the 400m. Brown paced his lap in 50.11 for a new personal best.
Justin Fabela and
Jeremy Slaughter finished together at 14
th and 15
th with times of 51.64 and 51.77 (PR).
Garrett Hadaway rounded out UC's competitors in this event with a 57.42 lap.
Leonardo Daley posted a national qualifying performance in the 110m hurdles with an "A" standard time of 14.43. This earned tird place and a spot in the finals tomorrow.
Andy Tchyombo also earned a place in the finals after a sixth place performance, clocking a new PR of 15.59.
Ken Cobb led the way in the 100m dash for the Pats. The senior sprinted to the finish in 10.73 for seventh place, advancing to the final race tomorrow afternoon.
Matthew Chavers missed the finals by a tenth of a second, as he placed ninth with a new personal best time of 10.86.
Ryan Long finished 11
th in 10.96 while
Tyrell Floyd and
Elohim Bando posted PR's of 10.99 and 11.10.
Evan McCrickard rounded out the Patriots in the sprint, tying his career best time of 11.21.
Cumberlands' 4x800 relay squad clocked an 8:21.88 finish for sixth place, earning three points for the team. DeShawn Crowe and
Kevin Mengich handled the first four laps before
Garrett Hadaway and
Jeremy Wolf finished things off.
Four Patriots entered the javelin throw,
Kade Slusser's scoring performance leading the way. He finished seventh with a huge PR of 39.85m.
Jhawan Horton hit his second career best on the day after a 36.21m throw.
Chandler Powell and
Tristan Petrey placed 14
th and 15
th with 34.23m and 32.44m throws respectively. Powell's went for a PR by almost four meters.
Kyle Woodward finished UC's day in the 10k race. The sophomore just missed out on a scoring finish, running his 25 laps in 34.57.74 for ninth-place.
The Patriots scored 48 points on Sunday to lead all teams through the first day. Cumberland University tallied 47 while Lindsey Wilson earned 46 points to round out the top-three.
The final day of the MSC championships will take place tomorrow where a new Mid-South Champion will be crowned. The racewalk is scheduled to lead a busy day of competition tomorrow morning at 8:45 AM.
